Immutable, Unchanging God – Jeremiah 32:20

Growing with God: A daily devotional with Tonia Slimm.

Jeremiah 32:20 (NIV)

“You performed signs and wonders in Egypt and have continued them to this day, in Israel and among all mankind, and have gained the renown that is still yours.”

Jeremiah 32:20 (MSG)

“‘You performed signs and wonders in the country of Egypt and continue to do so right into the present, right here in Israel and everywhere else, too. You’ve made a reputation for yourself that doesn’t diminish.”

****************************************

“…who set signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, and even to this day [continues to do so] both in Israel and among mankind; and You have made a name for Yourself, as at this day.” -AMPLIFIED

“He (Jeremiah) reminds God of his steadfast faithfulness and miraculous power, which had saved his people in the past.” ~Donald Flemming

As Jeremiah prays to the Lord, he mentions that fact that the Lord is the Rewarder, and He is just and righteous in His judgement. Jeremiah makes this observation; each person will be rewarded for the way they have chosen to live their life.

“… the one great in counsel and powerful in action. Your eyes are on all the ways of the children of men in order to reward each person according to his ways and as the result of his actions.” -Jeremiah 32:19 (CSB)

And as Jeremiah continues in his prayer, we find him reflecting on the fact that the Lord does not change. What Adonai has done in the past, He can, and will, do in the future. God has not changed!

“What miraculous signs and wonders You did in the land of Egypt! You continue to perform them for Israel and the rest of humanity to this day! You have made a great name for yourself among the nations, and we still remember Your great works today.” -(VOICE)

Remember, Jeremiah is speaking to the Lord in front of many witnesses, and he makes note of the fact that the Lord has done great things for Israel in the past, signs and wonders. Adonai had performed miracles for His people in the past, and Jeremiah declares that He was still doing them in their day. All of Israel could recount and remember what the Lord had done for them in the past, especially the wonders He had done for them while they were still in Egypt. Consider the two verses that follow as prime examples:

“You brought Israel out of Egypt with mighty miracles and great power and terror. You gave Israel this land that you promised their fathers long ago—a wonderful land that ‘flows with milk and honey.’” -Jeremiah 32:21-22 (TLB)

Jeremiah may have been very well reminding himself of God’s immutability, His unchanging nature. But Jeremiah also wanted these witnesses to know that their God had not changed. God could still do for them what He had done in the past. The Lord had not lost His power, nor His ability to save them.

NOTE: To be immutable is to be constant, unchangeable, lasting, enduring, fixed, and everlasting.

“You have done incredible things in the land of Egypt—things still remembered to this day. And you have continued to do great miracles in Israel and all around the world. You have made your name very great, as it is today.” -(TLB)

“How foolish to purchase property in a town occupied by the enemy! But if you believe that there is a future for that land, you will not hesitate to buy it. God’s people live in the future tense and measure today’s decisions in the light of tomorrow’s certainties.” ~Warren. W. Wiersbe

There are those who would tell us that God does not do those sorts of things any longer, those miracles, or those signs and wonders. But the Word of God tells us that He does not change.

“Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above; it comes down from the Father of lights [the Creator and Sustainer of the heavens], in whom there is no variation [no rising or setting] or shadow cast by His turning [for He is perfect and never changes].” -James 1:17 (AMP)

The Lord Almighty is everlasting, and His days will never end.

“In the beginning, You laid the foundation of the earth and set the skies above us with Your own hands. But while they will someday pass away, You remain forever; when they wear out like old clothes, You will roll them up and change them into something new, and they will pass away. But You are the same, You will never change; Your years will never come to an end.” -Psalm 102:25-27 (VOICE)

God’s plans were made for every generation, and His plans will not change.

“The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the thoughts and plans of His heart through all generations.” -Psalm 33:11 (AMP)

What He has done in the past, He can still do today.

“Remember the old days. For I am God; there is no other. I am God; there are no other gods like Me. From the beginning I declare how things will end; from times long past, I tell what is yet to be, saying: “My intentions will come to pass.  I will make things happen as I determine they should.” -Isaiah 46:9-10 (VOICE)

Keep in mind, God is good.

“For the Lord is good; His mercy and lovingkindness are everlasting, His faithfulness [endures] to all generations.” -Psalm 100:5 (AMP)

Remember as well, God is always faithful.

“Your love, O Eternal One, towers high into the heavens. Even the skies are lower than Your faithfulness. Your justice is like the majestic mountains. Your judgments are as deep as the oceans, and yet in Your greatness, You, O Eternal, offer life for every person and animal.” -Psalm 36:5-6 (VOICE)

“One important thing about God’s immutability is that “His mercy ceases not, for it is ‘everlasting” (Psalm 100:5).   If you have repented and put your trust in Jesus Christ, then you have received His mercy and that mercy isn’t dependent upon how well you perform or how little you sin.  That’s good news for humans.  That the mercy of God is “everlasting” is a comforting thing.  To know that He doesn’t change His mind about us is reassuring because we often have doubts but God knows the future…the end from the beginning.” ~Jack Wellman

My friend, our God is unchanging, immutable. What He has done for others in the past, He can do for you today. His miracles were not just for the past. He is the same, yesterday, today and forever. Are you in need of a miracle? Then ask Him. Remember, you have not because you ask not. Ask, and have faith that He is able to do it. “Now to Him Who, by (in consequence of) the [action of His] power that is at work within us, is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly, far over and above all that we [dare] ask or think [infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams]—To Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations forever and ever. Amen (so be it).” -Ephesians 3:20-21 (AMPC)

“Consider what thou owest to his immutability. Though thou hast changed a thousand times, he has not changed once; though thou hast shifted thy intentions, and thy will, yet he has not once swerved from his eternal purpose, but still has held thee fast.” ~Charles Spurgeon

My Prayer:

Adonai Elohim, my Great Lord, you are the immutable, unchanging God. What you have done in the past, you are still able to do today. You are still the miracle working God. Your abilities have not diminished, for you stay the same from everlasting to everlasting. I am so grateful for this, Lord. Because I can go to your Word and read of the miracles, the signs and wonders that you have done in the past, and remind myself that you are ABLE! You can do for me what you have done for those people. Lord, help me to remember that you are unchanging, faithful, and true. You are merciful and loving, wanting to give to me your very best. Help my faith in you to grow stronger. Help me to trust your plans as I obediently follow your leading in my life. Lord, I believe that you are ABLE to do exceedingly more than I could ever ask or imagine. I choose to walk in faith. I believe!
