2 Peter 3:14 (NIV)
So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this (Day of the Lord), make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.
2 Peter 3:14 (MSG)
So, my dear friends, since this is what you have to look forward to, do your very best to be found living at your best, in purity and peace.
“So, beloved, since you are looking forward to these things, be diligent and make every effort to be found by Him [at His return] spotless and blameless, in peace [that is, inwardly calm with a sense of spiritual well-being and confidence, having lived a life of obedience to Him].” -AMPLIFIED
Peter’s intention in writing this letter was to remind believers that there would be scoffers who would taunt them about their belief of Christ’s return, but there was a need to stand firm and hold fast to God’s promises. There will always be those who mock; sowing fear, animosity and unbelief. The follower of Christ though must keep looking forward.
Peter tells his reader, “…since you are looking forward to this Day…” To be looking forward is to be in a state of expectation; to be looking for the answer to a promise with confidence and hope. It means we are looking for this promise to come to pass excitedly.
Peter urges his audience to, “make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with Him”. Since we have no idea when this coming will take place it is imperative that we are ready all the time. Peter shares these thoughts earlier in the chapter, “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.” -2 Peter 3:10-12a (NIV)
Peter implores us to be diligent! Be on your toes and ready for His coming every moment of every day. Paul says something similar to Timothy, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” -2 Timothy 2:15 (NIV)
Live your life in such a way that no one will have any doubt of who you are and whom you belong to. Live your life in such a way that others will see God at work in your life and desire to know Him too. Live your life in such a way that there is no need to fear His return on the scene at any moment. Live your life in such a way that when you stand before Him there is nothing to be ashamed, embarrassed or apologetic for.
Jesus is coming back soon; very soon. Are we His followers expectantly looking forward to that day? Are we prepared and ready? He is looking for a people who are without spot or wrinkle; can we say that is truly us? It may be time for a little spiritual wellness check-up.
“If I had three hundred men who feared nothing but God, hated nothing but sin, and were determined to know nothing among men but Jesus Christ and him crucified, I would set the world on fire.” (John Wesley)
Lord, I want to be ready and waiting for your soon coming. Help me to be diligent in my walk with you; allowing nothing at all to come between us. Please, help me always to be living my life in such a way that I have nothing to be ashamed of before you. I want to be a testimony to the grace of a loving, gracious, God; I want to let my light shine brightly for you. Help me to make every effort to live my life to bring glory to your Name!
