That Pesky Moth – Isaiah 51:8

Growing with God: A daily devotional with Tonia Slimm.

Isaiah 51:8 (NIV)

“For the moth will eat them up like a garment; the worm will devour them like wool. But my righteousness will last forever, my salvation through all generations.”

Isaiah 51:8 (MSG)

“Those insults and mockeries are moth-eaten, from brains that are termite-ridden, But my setting-things-right lasts, my salvation goes on and on and on.”

***********************************

“For the moth will eat them like a garment, and the worm will eat them like wool. But My righteousness and justice [faithfully promised] will exist forever, and My salvation to all generations.” –AMPLIFIED

Their unbelieving critics would pass away in time, the product of natural decay. But God’s righteousness and salvation will last forever, and so will those who trust in Him who will bring them to pass.” ~Thomas Constable

In yesterday’s text God warned Israel to listen to Him, and not fear those who insult and taunt them. What God thinks of us is more important than what others think of us. Adonai said to Israel:

“So listen to me, you who care for what is right, who treasure my teaching in your hearts: Do not fear the insults of others; do not be troubled when they revile you.” -Isaiah 51:7 (The Passion Translation)

“But My righteousness will be forever, and My salvation from generation to generation: Knowing that the righteousness and salvation of the LORD are permanent and the opposition and mocking of the wicked are temporary, we should stand strong in faith. This is something to listen to.” ~David Guzik

Today’s text is the companion to yesterday’s, it completes God’s thought. Adonai finishes out with these words of caution:

For they’ll come to nothing; they’ll be eaten up as a moth eats a shirt; they’ll be consumed as a worm feeds on wool. But My justice will endure. I will extend My saving action to every generation.” -(VOICE)

God says: “Those people who have tried to intimidate you, those who have mocked you because of your loyalty to me, they will be destroyed. In comparison to Me, they are nothing. They are weak and insignificant. In fact, moths and worms will eat those people, just like they eat up a wool garment. But My goodness, and My salvation will carry on, from generation to generation.”

Those pesky moths and worms are mentioned once again. So, we need to grasp the significance of them. These are tiny insects that lay their eggs primarily in woolen clothes, and once the eggs have hatched the larvae then feed on the cloth itself. Moth in the Hebrew language is ash” and it means “death”. In our text they symbolize death and destruction to those who pursue wickedness, not righteousness.

“The Hebrew term for moth denotes “to fall away” just as the garments eaten moth fall away.” ~Sam Ellis

The point being those who torment God’s children will experience eternal death and destruction. But God’s deliverance, and salvation, His justice and mercy, they will last forever, to the generations.

“For the moth shall destroy them like garments; the worm shall eat them like wool; but my justice and mercy shall last forever, and my salvation from generation to generation.” -(TLB)

“The idea is, that they shall be consumed as the moth eats up a garment; or rather, that the moth itself shall consume them as it does a garment: that is, that they were so weak when compared with Yahweh that even the moth, one of the smallest, and most contemptible of insects, would consume them.” ~Albert Barnes

Jesus, while teaching the crowds, in what we call His Sermon on the Mount, made this point to them:

“Blessed [comforted by inner peace and God’s love] are those who are persecuted for doing that which is morally right, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [both now and forever].” -Matthew 5:10 (AMP)

Jesus, speaking to His disciples, and the crowds, taught them what was most important in life:

The thing you should seek is God’s kingdom. Then all the other things you need will be given to you. Don’t fear, little flock. Your Father wants to give you the kingdom. Sell the things you have and give to the poor. Get for yourselves purses that don’t wear out. Get the treasure in heaven that never runs out. Thieves can’t steal it in heaven, and moths can’t destroy it. Your heart will be where your treasure is.” -Luke 12:31-34 (ICB)

Jesus, speaking to His disciples again, warned them to be careful about being foolish, and unmindful of planning for their eternal future. He told them that the treasures they stored for themselves on earth tend to be temporal, but their treasures in heaven would last:

“Some people store up treasures in their homes here on earth. This is a shortsighted practice—don’t undertake it. Moths and rust will eat up any treasure you may store here. Thieves may break into your homes and steal your precious trinkets. Instead, put up your treasures in heaven where moths do not attack, where rust does not corrode, and where thieves are barred at the door. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” -Matthew 6:19-21 (VOICE)

“My home is in Heaven. I’m just traveling through this world.” ~Billy Graham

Even James makes mention of the fact that the riches of the wealthy will not last.

“Hey, you rich folk, misery is on its way; so cry and moan  because you will watch your riches rot before your eyes as the moths devour your fine clothes. Your stockpile of silver and gold is tarnished and corroded, and this rust will stand up in the final judgment and testify against you. It will eat your flesh like fire and become a permanent and painful reminder that you have hoarded your wealth through these last days.” -James 5:1-3 (VOICE)

“When you are prone to fret, remember that the Creator is your Father, and you have nothing to fear.” ~Warren W. Wiersbe

My friend, we need to remember our time on earth is just a journey through. This world will not last, but eternity is forever. Make wise choices that will endure. Store up for yourself treasures in heaven, where that pesky moth cannot touch and, or destroy. Fear God, not man.

“Choose to be kingdom minded.”  ~Liv Brown

My Prayer:

Adonai–Tzva’ot, God Almighty, thank you for the reminder that this world is not my home, and what others think of me is not nearly as important as what you think of me. I am just a pilgrim passing through, on my way to my true home, where you, my Lord, and Savior are waiting for me. Remind me that the temporary pleasures of this world, are nothing compared to what you have in store for your faithful children. Here, I need to worry about that pesky moth, but it cannot touch what I have stored up in the heavenly treasury. Help me to keep my priories in the right order, Lord. Help me to be focusing on what truly matters. I choose to be kingdom minded. Thank you for being my Helper, Lord.

Fear God, Not Man – Isaiah 51:7

Growing with God: A daily devotional with Tonia Slimm.

Isaiah 51:7 (NIV)

“Hear me, you who know what is right, you people who have taken my instruction to heart: do not fear the reproach of mere mortals or be terrified by their insults.”

Isaiah 51:7 (MSG)

“Listen now, you who know right from wrong, you who hold my teaching inside you: pay no attention to insults, and when mocked don’t let it get you down.”

***********************************

“Listen to Me, you who know righteousness (right standing with God), the people in whose heart is My law and instruction; do not fear the reproach and taunting of man, nor be distressed at their reviling.” -AMPLIFIED

For a third time the Lord urged His people, who already knew something of righteousness, to listen to Him. They were the people who had received God’s instruction by special revelation and who treasured it in their hearts. They were the godly remnant in Israel. They could count on unbelievers reproaching and reviling them. Nevertheless, they should not fear them or lose heart, but follow the example of the perfect Servant by trusting God to fulfill His Word.” ~Thomas Constable

In yesterday’s text we found God reminding Israel, again, that He had not forgotten them, and that He wanted them to hold on to their hope and faith in Him. God said to Israel:

“Lift up your eyes to the heavenly realm and look at the earth far below.
Though the heavens disappear like smoke, though the earth wears out like a garment,
and though all the people die like gnats, my salvation will endure forever
and my righteousness will never end!” -Isaiah 51:6 (The Passion Translation)

In today’s passage, we find God insisting that the people “listen” to Him. Again, He is trying to get their attention. What He is about to say to them is important. And it is this:

“Do not fear your oppressors. Fear God, not man.”

“Listen to Me, you who already live out what is true and right, who treasure My instruction within your hearts: don’t be afraid of people’s scorn. Don’t let their dismissive criticism, bitter anger, or hatred get you down.” -(VOICE)

Remember back in Isaiah 51:1, God told Israel this:

“Listen to Me, you who pursue righteousness (right standing with God), Who seek and inquire of the Lord: Look to the rock from which you were cut And to the excavation of the quarry from which you were dug.” -(AMP)

Again, God says “listen” to my instruction. Pay attention to what I have to say to you. For if you are truly pursuing righteousness, you would listen to My instruction, and not be concerned with the taunts, and rantings of others.

What truly matters is what God thinks of us, not what others think of us. We need to keep in mind something that Solomon wrote in Proverbs:

“It is dangerous to be concerned with what others think of you, but if you trust the Lord, you are safe.” -Proverbs 29:25 (Good News Translation)

“What God knows about me is more important than what others think about me.”  ~Surgeo Bell

“Listen to me, you who know the right from wrong and cherish my laws in your hearts: don’t be afraid of people’s scorn or their slanderous talk.” -(TLB)

“If we have the promise of God, and the assurance of his favor, we shall have no occasion to dread the reproaches and the scoffs of people.” ~Albert Barnes

Lest Israel “think” that they would not know wrong from right, in the book of Jeremiah we find God reminding Israel that He would be their Teacher. He would ensure that they knew right from wrong, and He would forgive and forget their past sins. God tells Israel:

“This is the brand-new covenant that I will make with Israel when the time comes. I will put my law within them—write it on their hearts!—and be their God. And they will be my people. They will no longer go around setting up schools to teach each other about God. They’ll know me firsthand, the dull and the bright, the smart and the slow. I’ll wipe the slate clean for each of them. I’ll forget they ever sinned!” God’s Decree.” -Jeremiah 31:33-34 (MSG)

Stop and consider something, did Jesus care about what others thought of Him? If we thought about it, we would realize that He did not care about what others thought of Him, His whole mentality was to be about His Father’s business, and to please His Father.  He did not allow what others thought or said about Him to keep Him from doing His Father’s will. Numerous times in the Gospels we find Jesus saying that He came to do the will of His Father who sent Him. Take note of what Jesus said concerning this:

“All that My Father gives to Me comes to Me. I will receive everyone; I will not send away anyone who comes to Me. And here’s the reason: I have come down from heaven not to pursue My own agenda but to do what He desires. I am here on behalf of the Father who sent Me.” -John 6:37-38 (VOICE)

“I cannot imagine a true man saying, ‘I love Christ, but I do not want others to know that I love him, lest they should laugh at me.’ That is a reason to be laughed at, or rather, to be wept over. Afraid of being laughed at? Oh sir, this is indeed a cowardly fear!” ~Charles Spurgeon

We even find Jesus, teaching His disciples, addressing this very topic, about not fearing those who threaten us, oppress us, or try to intimidate us. These people

“Do not be afraid of those who may taunt or persecute you. Everything they do—even if they think they are hiding behind closed doors—will come to light. All their secrets will eventually be made known. And you should proclaim in the bright light of day everything that I have whispered to you in the dark. Whatever whispers you hear—shout them from the rooftops of houses. Don’t fear those who aim to kill just the body but are unable to touch the soul. The One to fear is He who can destroy you, soul and body, in the fires of hell.” -Matthew 10:26-28 (VOICE)

“The greatest prison people live in is the fear of what other people think.” ~David Icke

My friend, fear God, not man. God has promised to teach us right from wrong. Stand up for what you know is right and true. Remember, we are a light to a lost and dying world. People need to see Christ in us. They need to see that we are not after our own agenda, but are willing to do the will of the Father, just as Jesus did. Do not be ashamed of whose you are, stand and be counted as a child of the Most High God.

“Until we care more about what God thinks than what other people think we are never truly free.” ~Christine Caine

My Prayer:

Adonai–Tzva’ot, God Almighty, I am not ashamed of you. I want to stand up for your truth, and what is right. I ask that you instill within me a boldness, and a courage to stand for what is right and true, even when others do not. Help me to be a light, shining bright for you. Remind me to keep my heart and my ears in tune with you, always listening, and looking for what you are doing. I want to be about my Father’s business, just as your Son, Jesus, was, help me to be. Thank you, Lord.

Lift Up Your Eyes – Isaiah 51:6

Growing with God: A daily devotional with Tonia Slimm.

Isaiah 51:6 (NIV)

“Lift up your eyes to the heavens, look at the earth beneath; the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment and its inhabitants die like flies. But my salvation will last forever, my righteousness will never fail.”

Isaiah 51:6 (MSG)

“Look up at the skies, ponder the earth under your feet. The skies will fade out like smoke, the earth will wear out like work pants, and the people will die off like flies. But my salvation will last forever, my setting-things-right will never be obsolete.”

***********************************************

“Lift up your eyes to the heavens, then look to the earth beneath; for the heavens will be torn to pieces and vanish like smoke, and the earth will wear out like a garment and its inhabitants will die in like manner. But My salvation will be forever, and My righteousness (justice) [and faithfully fulfilled promise] will not be broken.” -AMPLIFIED

“Through the dark and stormy night Faith beholds a feeble light Up the blackness streaking; Knowing God’s own time is best, In a patient hope I rest For the full day-breaking!” ~John Greenleaf Whittier

In yesterday’s passage we found God reminding Israel that His deliverance for them was near. God told them:

“My righteousness is coming closer, and my salvation has gone out. My mighty arms will govern the people. The islands will trust in me and put their hope in the unveiling of my might.” -Isaiah 51:5 (The Passion Translation)

Remember, Israel had lost all hope of ever being set free from Babylonian captivity. They had given in to discouragement and possibly even depression. They thought God had abandoned them, and He would not keep His promises made to them because they had sunk too low and messed up to badly. But God Message to them continues, and He tells them:

Don’t worry—look up at the sky and down at the earth. The sky will disappear like smoke; the earth will wear out like a well-used garment; every last thing may perish and dissolve, but My salvation is for all time. My justice will not end.” -(VOICE)

NOTE: Keep in mind that much of Isaiah speaks of the time of the Millennium reign and the time beyond. This passage alludes to that time.

God is reminding Israel that He has not forgotten them. He desires to instill hope and give them a boast of faith in Him. He reminds them once again to be looking expectantly for His deliverance; watch the skies, even keep your eyes on what is happening to the earth. He then gives them hints of what they need to be looking for:

“The sky will vanish like smoke. The earth will wear out like clothing, and those who live there will die like flies.” -(GW)

But we find Adonai–Tzva’ot, God Almighty, reminding Israel that His salvation will last forever, and His righteousness/goodness will never fail.

“But my salvation will continue forever. My goodness will never end.” -(ICB)

“Look high in the skies and watch the earth beneath, for the skies shall disappear like smoke, the earth shall wear out like a garment, and the people of the earth shall die like flies. But my salvation lasts forever; my righteous rule will never die nor end.” -(TLB)

“Why am I so overwrought? Why am I so disturbed? Why can’t I just hope in God?
Despite all my emotions, I will believe and praise the One who saves me and is my life.” ~The sons of Korah (Psalm 42:5 VOICE)

The unknown writer of Psalm 102 wrote a prayer for those who were suffering discouragement and suffering. Some of his words echo what Isaiah has recorded for us in today’s passage. He wrote from the heart, holding nothing back, feeling overwhelmed, he complains to God:

“God has made me tired of living. He has cut short my life.
So I said, “My God, do not take me in the middle of my life. Your years go on and on.
In the beginning you made the earth. And your hands made the skies. They will be destroyed, but you will remain. They will all wear out like clothes. And, like clothes, you will change them. And they will be thrown away. But you never change. And your life will never end.
Our children will live in your presence. And their children will remain with you.” -Psalm 102:23-28 (ICB)

“The law works fear and wrath; grace works hope and mercy.” ~Martin Luther

Jesus, speaking to the crowds about the end times, gave them things to look for before it would happen. Why did He do that? He did not want them to give up hope. He was giving them signs to keep their eyes open to, so they would Know that His coming would be soon. He did not want them to be afraid, but prepared. Jesus told the crowds:

“When you see armies all around Jerusalem, you will know it will soon be destroyed. At that time, the people in Judea should run away to the mountains. The people in Jerusalem must get out, and those who are near the city should not go in. These are the days of punishment to bring about all that is written in the Scriptures. How terrible it will be for women who are pregnant or have nursing babies! Great trouble will come upon this land, and God will be angry with these people. They will be killed by the sword and taken as prisoners to all nations. Jerusalem will be crushed by non-Jewish people until their time is over. There will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars. On earth, nations will be afraid and confused because of the roar and fury of the sea. People will be so afraid they will faint, wondering what is happening to the world, because the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then people will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to happen, look up and hold your heads high, because the time when God will free you is near!” -Luke 21:20-28 (New Century Version)

“Without Christ there is no hope.” ~Charles Spurgeon

For some people, the end times sound scary, but the Christian has nothing to fear. We just need to remember God’s promises and hold on to our hope and faith in Him. Let us remember something that Isaiah recorded for us back in chapter 25, words of hope, and expectation. Words that will help us in those times that we feel like giving up, and discouragement is threatening us. Isaiah records this for us:

“On this mountain Adonai-Tzva’ot will make for all peoples a feast of rich food and superb wines,
delicious, rich food and superb, elegant wines. On this mountain he will destroy the veil which covers the face of all peoples, the veil enshrouding all the nations. He will swallow up death forever.
Adonai Elohim will wipe away the tears from every face, and he will remove from all the earth
the disgrace his people suffer. For Adonai has spoken. On that day they will say, “See! This is our God!
We waited for him to save us. This is Adonai ; we put our hope in him. We are full of joy, so glad he saved us!” -Isaiah 25:6-9 (Complete Jewish Bible)

“It is always darkest just before the day dawneth.” ~Thomas Fuller

My friend, are you experiencing discouragement and possibly even depression today? If so, lift up your eyes to the heavens. Remember whose you are, and what He has promised. He has good things in store for you. His redemption is fast approaching. Do not lose hope. Keep your faith in Him, and trust that He is at work, even now. Despite what you are feeling, do not let your emotions rule the way you think, keep your hope in God. Sing His praise and let Him remind you of who He is.

“So when the troubles begin, don’t be afraid. Look up—raise your head high, because the truth is that your liberation is fast approaching.” ~Jesus (Luke 21:28 VOICE)

My Prayer:

Adonai–Tzva’ot, God Almighty, I have to admit, there are times when I become discouraged and frustrated at how things are going in the world around me. Sometimes, Lord, it appears that the Enemy is winning, and you are losing. I forget to keep my eyes focused on you and allow myself to get distracted by the chaos that is happening around me. Forgive me, Lord. In those times, I ask that your Holy Spirit remind me to be looking for the signs of your soon coming return. Open my spiritual eyes to what is happening and bring back to my mind that in the end, you will be victorious. My hope is in you, Lord. I will lift up my eyes, for my redemption is drawing near.

God’s Deliverance is Near – Isaiah 51:5

Growing with God: A daily devotional with Tonia Slimm.

Isaiah 51:5 (NIV)

“My righteousness draws near speedily, my salvation is on the way, and my arm will bring justice to the nations. The islands will look to me and wait in hope for my arm.”

Isaiah 51:5 (MSG)

“My deliverance arrives on the run, my salvation right on time. I’ll bring justice to the peoples. Even faraway islands will look to me and take hope in my saving power.”

**************************************

“My righteousness (justice) is near, My salvation has gone forth, and My arms will judge the peoples; the islands and coastlands will wait for Me, and they will wait with hope and confident expectation for My arm.” -AMPLIFIED

“God is never late and rarely early. He is always exactly right on time–His time.” ~Dillon Burroughs

Yesterday’s text reminded us that God sent His Son, Jesus, to be the Light to all nations. And His Light will bring justice. Isaiah records for us this Message from God:

“Listen to me, my people; pay attention to me, my nation. For I release my teaching to the nations, and I will cause the light of justice to rest on them.” -Isaiah 51:4 (The Passion Translation)

In today’s passage, this Message from God continues:

“My justice is coming closer. My rescue is on the way. My strong arm will extend justice to the nations. Distant shores are looking to Me with hope that I will accomplish it.” -(VOICE)

God says to Israel:

“My deliverance is near, nearer than you think. I will make my victory come to pass quickly, for my righteous and salvation are near. My arms will judge the people. My arms will rule over the nations. The coastlands, and the islands have waited long for my intervention, they have been waiting and looking for Me expectantly.”

Remember what God had told the people of Israel in verse 1:

“Hearken unto me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek Jehovah: look unto the rock [whence] ye were hewn, and to the hole of the pit [whence] ye were digged.” -DARBY

They had been waiting for their deliverance, but they had gotten to the point where they were ready to give up all hope. God gives them a good pep talk, reminding them that He is with them, and He will bring His justice. They needed to keep trusting Him, even though they could not see the answer yet.

“My mercy and justice are coming soon; your salvation is on the way. I will rule the nations; they shall wait for me and long for me to come.” -(TLB)

“With God, there’s always an appointed time for things, and when you put Him first, trust in His timing, and keep the faith, miracles happen!” ~Germany Kent

I remind you of something that we really need to keep in mind, always. God’s way of doing things is not necessarily our way of doing things. Isaiah reminds us of this fact further along in the book, recording this Message from God:

Eternal One: “My intentions are not always yours, and I do not go about things as you do.
My thoughts and My ways are above and beyond you, just as heaven is far from your reach here on earth.
For as rain and snow can’t go back once they’ve fallen, but soak into the ground
And nourish the plants that grow, providing seed to the farmer and bread for the hungry,
so it is when I declare something. My word will go out and not return to Me empty,
But it will do what I wanted; it will accomplish what I determined.” -Isaiah 55:8-11 (VOICE)

Israel thought God had forgotten them, but He had not. Once again, we can turn to the book of Isaiah, and find this Message from God, to the people of Israel. A Message that advises them that God never abandoned them, they chose to walk away from Him. God said to Israel:

Eternal One: “I was ready and willing to help before anyone even asked.
I was found by people who did not seek Me; I showed My face and said, “Here I am! I am right here!”
to a nation which did not call on Me. I kept extending Myself to a people who don’t care a whit.
All day long I opened my hands to those who constantly work against Me, those busy pursuing their own rotten path, inspired by their own rotten schemes. These people continue to insult Me, right to My face, pursuing other gods, sacrificing in gardens  and offering incense on altars made of bricks.” -Isaiah 65:1-3 (VOICE)

Paul, speaking to the Athenians, had this to say about God:

“This God made us in all our diversity from one original person, allowing each culture to have its own time to develop, giving each its own place to live and thrive in its distinct ways. His purpose in all this was that people of every culture and religion would search for this ultimate God, grope for Him in the darkness, as it were, hoping to find Him. Yet, in truth, God is not far from any of us.” -Acts 17:26-27 (VOICE)

“Don’t lose hope. Don’t give up. Don’t be discouraged. Keep believing and wait patiently for the fulfillment of all the promises of God in your life, He is never late and He never delays, He’s always on time.” ~Abraham David

My friend, God is not far off. He has not forgotten you or me. In fact, He has already prepared the answer to our prayer. He is never too late, and He is never early, but His answer comes always at just the right on time. His deliverance for us is near. Do not give up hope, but patiently wait in expectation, for our redemption draws near!

“God’s never early, never late, but always on time. Our timing isn’t God’s timing. For us, God’s timing often feels like a long, desperate delay. God’s perfect timing does two things: It grows our faith as we are forced to wait and trust in God and it makes certain that He, and He alone, gets the glory and praise for pulling us through.” ~Bill Thomas

My Prayer:

Adonai–Tzva’ot, God Almighty, thank you for always being present and available for me. I ask that you forgive me for ever doubting you. For you are Emmanuel, God with us. You are the God who will deliver and save at just the right time. You are never too early, and you are never late. Please, remind me, when the going gets tough, that you are doing things for a reason and your ways are not necessarily my ways. Your ways are greater, higher, better than mine could ever be. Help me to trust you in the process, Lord. Thank you.

He is the Light for All People – Isaiah 51:4

Growing with God: A daily devotional with Tonia Slimm.

Isaiah 51:4 (NIV)

“Listen to me, my people; hear me, my nation: Instruction will go out from me; my justice will become a light to the nations.”

Isaiah 51:4 (MSG)

“Pay attention, my people. Listen to me, nations. Revelation flows from me. My decisions light up the world.”

********************************************

“Listen carefully to Me [says the Lord], O My people, and hear Me, O My nation; for a [divine] law will go forth from Me, and I will quickly establish My justice as a light to the peoples.” -AMPLIFIED

“Ye Jews, whom I chose to be my peculiar people, do not reject my counsel, which, I have told you, even the Gentiles will receive, nor forsake the mercies of which even they will partake. For a law shall proceed from me — A new law, even the doctrine of the gospel.” ~Benson Commentary

In yesterday’s passage, we were reminded that Adonai is a God of compassion and the Giver of comfort. He is the One who will fill our hearts with joy and laughter.

“Indeed, Yahweh will comfort Zion, restore her, and comfort all her broken places. He will transform her wilderness into the garden of Bliss, her desert into the garden of Yahweh. Joy and laughter will fill the air with thanksgiving and joyous melodies.” -Isaiah 51:3 (The Passion Translation)

Once again, we find God telling Israel to “Listen up!” To “Pay attention!” We find God informing Israel that His instructions, His teachings, are not just for Israel, but they are a light to the whole world, all people, everywhere.

Eternal One: Listen closely, you who are Mine; lend an ear, My nation; for My instruction will go straight out into all the world and My justice will illuminate all people wherever they are.” -(VOICE)

God is speaking to His covenant people, Israel. He instructs them to pay attention to what He has to say to them. This impresses on us that what He has to say is very important. God delivers this Message:

“Pay attention! Hear what I have to say! Open up your ears to My voice and hear what I have to say to you, Israel. My teachings, My instruction is not just for the nation of Israel, it is for all nations, all people. My teachings, and My justice will be a Light to the nations, to all people.”

“Listen to me, my people; listen, O Israel, for I will see that right prevails.” -(TLB)

“When the LORD ultimately regathers, blesses, and saves Israel, He will also shine forth His justice to all the world – to Israel (My nation) and to all the nations (the peoples).” ~David Guzik

Jesus declared that He was the Light of the World in John 8:12. In this passage He was speaking to the crowds, but the Pharisees, who were also there, could not accept what He said about Himself. To them, Jesus said:

“I am the light that shines through the cosmos; if you walk with Me, you will thrive in the nourishing light that gives life and will not know darkness.” -(VOICE)

Back in Isaiah 42, we find God delivering this Message to Isaiah, of the fact that the Suffering Servant would bring forth justice to all the nations. God promises:

“Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; My Chosen One in whom My soul delights.
I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the nations.
He will not call out or shout aloud, Nor make His voice heard in the street.
A broken reed He will not break [off] And a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish [He will not harm those who are weak and suffering]; He will faithfully bring forth justice.
He will not be disheartened or crushed [in spirit]; [He will persevere] until He has established justice on the earth; And the coastlands will wait expectantly for His law.” -Isaia
h 42:1-4 (AMP)

I remind you that ultimately all of this will not come to pass until the last days. For Isaiah has already told us this:

“There will come a time in the last days when the mountain where the Eternal’s house stands
Will become the highest, most magnificent—grander than any of the mountains around it.
And all the nations of the world will run there, wanting to see it, feel it, fully experience it.
Many people of all languages, colors, and creeds will come. People: “Come! Let’s go to the Eternal’s mountain, to the house of the God of Jacob,
So that we might learn from Him how best to be, to go along in life as He would have us go.” After all, the law will pour out from Zion, the word of the Eternal, from Jerusalem.
God will decide what’s fair among nations and settle disputes among all sorts of people.
Meanwhile, they will hammer their swords into sickles, reshape their spears into pruning hooks.
One nation will not attack another. They will not practice war anymore.” -Isaiah 2:2-4 (VOICE)

What do we need to take away from today’s passage? That God’s Suffering Servant, Jesus, is the Light of the World. And He will bring justice to the nations. If we are God’s children, then we need to be walking as children of the Light and living in the Light. Paul, writing to the Ephesian church, said it this way:

“You are God’s children whom he loves. So try to be like God. Live a life of love. Love other people just as Christ loved us. Christ gave himself for us—he was a sweet-smelling offering and sacrifice to God. But there must be no sexual immorality among you. There must not be any kind of evil or greed. Those things are not right for God’s holy people. Also, there must be no evil talk among you. You must not speak foolishly or tell evil jokes. These things are not right for you. But you should be giving thanks to God. You can be sure of this: No one will have a place in the kingdom of Christ and of God who engages in sexual sin, or does evil things, or is greedy. Anyone who is greedy is serving a false god. Do not let anyone fool you by telling you things that are not true. These things will bring God’s anger on those who do not obey him. So have no part with them. In the past you were full of darkness, but now you are full of light in the Lord. So live like children who belong to the light. Light brings every kind of goodness, right living, and truth. Try to learn what pleases the Lord.” -Ephesians 5:1-10 (ICB)

“Walking in the light is the opposite of walking in darkness. It means seeing reality for what it is and being controlled by desires that accord with God’s light. If God is light, and in him is no darkness at all, then he is the bright pathway to the fulfillment of all our deepest longings. He is the deliverer from all dark dangers and obstacles to joy. He is the infinitely desirable One.” ~John Piper

My friend, Jesus Christ is the Light to all people, everywhere, to every nation, tongue, and tribe. Ultimately, He alone will bring justice. So, it is very important that we accept Him as our Savior. If we walk in His Light, we will thrive, but if we choose to walk in the darkness, we can expect judgement. I implore you, choose to walk in the Light.

“The issue is now clear. It is between light and darkness and everyone must choose his side.” ~G.K. Chesterton

My Prayer:

Adonai–Tzva’ot, God Almighty, your Son, Jesus Christ, is the Light of the world. Your Word tells me that He came to seek and to save that which was lost, that included me. I am so grateful for His willingness to come for my sake. I am so grateful for The Light, which makes this journey so much easier. Knowing that The Light is my constant companion, that He will illuminate the road ahead, and bring justice, helps and comforts me so much. I know that I can trust you, no matter what comes my way. Thank you for being The Light to the world. Help me to be a reflection of you to all those people that I come in contact with today.

The God of Comfort – Isaiah 51:3

Growing with God: A daily devotional with Tonia Slimm.

Isaiah 51:3 (NIV)

“The Lord will surely comfort Zion and will look with compassion on all her ruins; he will make her deserts like Eden, her wastelands like the garden of the Lord. Joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the sound of singing.”

Isaiah 51:3 (MSG)

“Likewise I, God, will comfort Zion, comfort all her mounds of ruins. I’ll transform her dead ground into Eden, her moonscape into the garden of God, A place filled with exuberance and laughter, thankful voices and melodic songs.”

*********************************************

“For the Lord will comfort Zion [in her captivity]; He will comfort all her ruins. And He will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord; joy and gladness will be found in her,
thanksgiving and the voice of a melody.” -AMPLIFIED

“Remembering Abraham and Sarah should give them (Israel) hope for this promise. The promise seems too good to be true, but by faithfully remembering God’s work in people like Abraham and Sarah, they would have the faith to believe God’s promise to them today. This shows how we can benefit through God’s work in the lives of others. When we hear of what God has done and is doing in the lives of others, it can build our faith for God’s work in our own lives.” ~David Guzik

We were reminded yesterday that it is God who brings the blessing. Using Abraham and Sarah as an example, God tells Israel:

“Yes, look to Abraham your father and to Sarah, who bore you. For when I called Abraham, he was but one person, but I blessed him greatly so that one became many.” -Isaiah 51:2 (The Passion Translation)

Adonai‘s Message continues in today’s text, as He reminds Israel that He is the One who comfort her, restore her, and bless her once again. Remember, God had instructed Israel to “Listen, and look up.” Adonai says to Israel:

“The Eternal One will relieve the troubles and worries of Zion and bring comfort to the rubble of its destruction. God will turn deserted places into a flourishing garden like Eden of old; happy voices will ring out in the Eternal’s garden; buoyant music and thanksgiving will fill the air.” -(VOICE)

We immediately find God reminding Israel that He will be the One who will bring comfort to them. Remember, He is our Heavenly Father, and a good father comforts and shows compassion.

God says to Israel: “I will not only comfort you, but I will comfort Jerusalem as well, and show her mercy. I will turn her waste lands, and her wilderness, once again into a flourishing garden. It will become like Eden of long ago. Once again, you will hear the sounds of joy and gladness within her borders. And there will be joyful singing of songs echoing within her. Once again there will be praise lifted up in my Name in that place.”

“And the Lord will bless Israel again, and make her deserts blossom; her barren wilderness will become as beautiful as the Garden of Eden. Joy and gladness will be found there, thanksgiving and lovely songs.” -(TLB)

God would turn her sorrow and wailing into joyful singing and thanksgiving. The implication is that as Abraham was strong in faith and believed God’s promises, so should the Israelites of Isaiah’s day.” ~Thomas Constable

All of this must have felt too good to be true to Israel. It seemed they needed convincing, So, a few verses further along in Isaiah 51, we find this verse, in which God promises again to fill Israel with joy and gladness:

“[The Lord God says] And the redeemed of the Lord shall return and come with singing to Zion; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads. They shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.” -Isaiah 51:11 (Amplified Bible, Classic Edition)

Even the Apostle Paul reminds us that our God is a God of comfort and compassion. He wrote this in his letter to the Corinthians:

“Praised be God, Father of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah, compassionate Father, God of all encouragement and comfort; who encourages us in all our trials, so that we can encourage others in whatever trials they may be undergoing with the encouragement we ourselves have received from God.” -2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (Complete Jewish Bible)

Even in the book of Revelation we can find that God’s comfort and compassion towards His children continues. Take notice of what John recorded for us. First:

“Then one of the twenty-four Elders asked me, “Do you know who these are, who are clothed in white, and where they come from?” “No, sir,” I replied. “Please tell me.” “These are the ones coming out of the Great Tribulation,” he said; “they washed their robes and whitened them by the blood of the Lamb. That is why they are here before the throne of God, serving him day and night in his temple. The one sitting on the throne will shelter them; they will never be hungry again, nor thirsty, and they will be fully protected from the scorching noontime heat. For the Lamb standing in front of the throne will feed them and be their Shepherd and lead them to the springs of the Water of Life. And God will wipe their tears away.” -Revelation 7:13-17 (TLB)

Later, in chapter 21, John records this for us:

“I looked again and could hardly believe my eyes. Everything above me was new. Everything below me was new. Everything around me was new because the heaven and earth that had been passed away, and the sea was gone, completely. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride on her wedding day, adorned for her husband and for His eyes only. And I heard a great voice, coming from the throne. A Voice: See, the home of God is with His people. He will live among them; they will be His people, and God Himself will be with them. The prophecies are fulfilled: He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; Mourning no more, crying no more, pain no more, for the first things have gone away. And the One who sat on the throne announced to His creation, The One: See, I am making all things new. (turning to me) Write what you hear and see, for these words are faithful and true.” -Revelation 21:1-5 (VOICE)

And take notice of something that John says at the very end of the book:

“No one or nothing will labor under any curse any longer. And the throne of God and of the Lamb will sit prominently in the city. God’s servants will continually serve and worship Him.” -Revelation 22:3 (VOICE)

“Snuggle in God’s arms. When you are hurting, when you feel lonely, left out. let Him cradle you, comfort you, reassure you of His all-sufficient power and love.” ~Kay Arthur

My friend, we serve a God who desires to show us compassion and give us comfort. Will you stop struggling against Him today, and rest in His arms of love and receive His comfort? He loves you so much, and He only wants what is best for you. Rest in His loving arms and accept the comfort He wants to give to you today.

“You don’t have to be alone in your hurt! Comfort is yours. Joy is an option. And it’s all been made possible by your Savior. He went without comfort so you might have it. He postponed joy so you might share in it. He willingly chose isolation so you might never be alone in your hurt and sorrow.” ~Joni Eareckson Tada

My Prayer:

Adonai–Tzva’ot, God Almighty, you are the God of all comfort and peace. Your Word reminds me that you desire to give to me compassion and comfort. This is because you are a good, good Father, and you love me. Sadly, too often I push you away, and struggle against you, even though I know in my head that I cannot find peace and true comfort without you. I am so sorry, Lord. Please forgive me. Help me to run to my Papa, when I am hurting, and not blame you for the hurt. I know that only you can satisfy those deepest longings within my soul. You are the God of comfort and compassion, and you will restore my joy and gladness! Weeping and sorrow will one day flee away. Thank you, my dear Lord. ❤

God Brings the Blessings – Isaiah 51:2

Growing with God: A daily devotional with Tonia Slimm.

Isaiah 51:2 (NIV)

“…look to Abraham, your father, and to Sarah, who gave you birth. When I called him he was only one man, and I blessed him and made him many.”

Isaiah 51:2 (MSG)

“Yes, ponder Abraham, your father, and Sarah, who bore you. Think of it! One solitary man when I called him, but once I blessed him, he multiplied.”

*************************************

Look to Abraham your father and to Sarah who gave birth to you in pain; for I called him when he was but one, then I blessed him and made him many.”-AMPLIFIED

“With our hectic schedules, sometimes we forget the important things—including the past blessings of God. We take for granted our relationships, our health, and the possessions that God has entrusted to us. Almost as soon as we set foot on land, we forget how God has guided us through the storm.” ~Michael Youssef

In yesterday’s text, we read of God encouraging Israel to look back and remember where they had come from. He implored them to remember who He was to them.

The Lord says, “Listen to me, you that want to be saved, you that come to me for help. Think of the rock from which you came, the quarry from which you were cut.” -Isaiah 51:1 (Good News Translation)

In today’s text, we find God reminding them of His faithfulness to their ancestors Abraham and Sarah. God encourages Israel when they are in a very discouraging place. They felt defeated, and hopeless; God says, remember….remember what I have done for your ancestors. If I could do bless them, I can bless you as well. Case in point:

“Look to your spiritual ancestors—Abraham, your father, and Sarah, who birthed you. Abraham was only one person when I called him. But with generous goodness, I made from him a numerous people.” -(VOICE)

“Remember your ancestors, and what I did for them. Abraham and Sarah were just two people, childless when I called them to their adventure with me. And yet once they choose to listen to my call, and obediently follow me, I blessed them, and made them a great nation.”

In the book of Genesis, we find recorded God’s promise to bless Abraham.

“Some time passed. One day, the word of the Eternal One came to Abram through a vision—a kind of waking dream. Eternal One: Do not be afraid, Abram. I am always your shield and protector. Your reward for loyalty and trust will be immense. Abram: Eternal Lord, what could You possibly give to me that would make that much of a difference in my life? After all, I am still childless, and Eliezer of Damascus stands to inherit all I own. Since You have not given me the gift of children, my only heir will be one of the servants born in my household. Immediately the word of the Eternal One came to him. Eternal One: No, Abram, this man will not be your heir. No one but your very own child will be an heir for you. God took him outside to show him something. Eternal One: Look up at the stars, and try to count them all if you can. There are too many to count! Your descendants will be as many as the stars. Abram believed God and trusted in His promises, so God counted it to his favor as righteousness.” -Genesis 15:1-6 (VOICE)

God reminds Israel that if He was able to keep His promise to Abraham, and He had, then He could keep His promise to them, and He would. God would restore and bless Israel once again.

“Yes, think about your ancestors Abraham and Sarah, from whom you came. You worry at being so small and few, but Abraham was only one when I called him. But when I blessed him, he became a great nation.” -(TLB)

“Abraham was one man, from one simple family. Yet God called him alone and increased him. This should remind His people today that God does not need many people to do a great work. He can bless and increase one man alone. Isaiah wanted God’s people – in view here are the returning exiles from Babylon, and those of Israel’s ultimate regathering – to not be discouraged of their small numbers but realize that just as He did great things with Abraham and Sarah, He can do great things through them.” ~David Guzik

David understood the need to trust God, even in the waiting; being careful not to give in to discouragement, and unbelief. David wrote this:

“I waited patiently for God to help me; then he listened and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out from the bog and the mire, and set my feet on a hard, firm path, and steadied me as I walked along. He has given me a new song to sing, of praises to our God. Now many will hear of the glorious things he did for me, and stand in awe before the Lord, and put their trust in him. Many blessings are given to those who trust the Lord and have no confidence in those who are proud or who trust in idols. O Lord my God, many and many a time you have done great miracles for us, and we are ever in your thoughts. Who else can do such glorious things? No one else can be compared with you. There isn’t time to tell of all your wonderful deeds.” -Psalm 40:1-5 (TLB)

“Remembering God’s faithfulness and His matchless love for you will help you to depend on Him in the different seasons of your life.” ~Pat Malia

I remind you of something that James wrote in his epistle: that every good and perfect gift comes done from the Father. And I remind you too, that our God does not change. What He has done for others, He can certainly do for you. Trust Him. James wrote these words of encouragement:

“My dearly loved brothers and sisters, don’t be misled. Every good gift bestowed, every perfect gift received comes to us from above, courtesy of the Father of lights. He is consistent. He won’t change His mind or play tricks in the shadows. We have a special role in His plan. He calls us to life by His message of truth so that we will show the rest of His creatures His goodness and love.” -James 1:16-18 (VOICE)

“Once a Christian gets eaten up with discouragement and unbelief it takes a great deal to shake him out of it. Those two emotions are the masterstrokes of Satan. So long as the child of God maintains an attitude of praise and trust in the Lord, then he is invincible. Once the devil gets him discouraged, that poor man is really going to take a knocking!” ~Alan Redpath

My friend, remember, God wants to bless you. What He has done for others, He can do also for you. He wants to shower you with His blessings, but He can only do so when we choose to be obedient to His call, just as Abraham and Sarah were obedient. Trust Him. He is able to do exactly what He has told you He will do for you. Remember, He loves you, and He only wants what is best for you.

“God never said that the journey would be easy, but He did say that the arrival would be worthwhile.”  ~Max Lucado

My Prayer:

Adonai–Tzva’ot, God Almighty, please forgive me for those time that I have given in to discouragement, and hopelessness. Yes, there have been times that I have forgotten your faithfulness, and I am so sorry. I know you can be trusted. I know that you have kept your promises in the past, every one of them. You have proven yourself to me. Help me to remember that every good and perfect gift comes from you. Help me to walk in obedience to you, and not fear what lies ahead, but trust that you are working all things out for my good and your glory. You bring the blessings; I am so grateful for this truth. I am counting on and trusting in you, Lord.

Look Back and Remember – Isaiah 51:1

Growing with God: A daily devotional with Tonia Slimm.

Isaiah 51:1 (NIV)

“Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness and who seek the Lord: look to the rock from which you were cut and to the quarry from which you were hewn;”

Isaiah 51:1 (MSG)

“Listen to me, all you who are serious about right living and committed to seeking God. Ponder the rock from which you were cut, the quarry from which you were dug.”

**********************************************

“Listen to Me, you who pursue righteousness (right standing with God), who seek and inquire of the Lord: look to the rock from which you were cut and to the excavation of the quarry from which you were dug.” -AMPLIFIED

“As the nation prepared to leave Babylon and return home, they needed to strengthen their faith in Jehovah God.” ~Warren W. Wiersbe

In yesterday’s text, we were reminded that there is only one way to Heaven, one way to make things right with God, and it is by walking in THE Light. Trying to make your own light to light your pathway will not work.

“But if you presume to light your own torch, you are playing with fire.
So go ahead, walk in the light of your own fires and the sparks you have kindled.
But I can promise you this: it will take you down into torment!” Isaiah 50:11 (The Passion Translation)

In today’s passage, and the verses that immediately follow, we find God telling Israel to look back and remember their spiritual roots. God reminds them once again that they are a spiritual people, and that He would take care of them. So, they needed to trust Him.

Note:  Three times in this chapter God exhorts His people, Israel, to, “Listen to Me!” In other words, “Pay Attention!”

“Listen closely, you who diligently work for justice and look for the Eternal One, for what is fair and true. It would be good for you to look back, look to the place from where you came, the rock out of which you were shaped and the quarry from where you were mined.” -(VOICE)

The last chapter ended with the outcome of those who reject God. This chapter begins with a call to those who have decided to live a righteous life and accept God’s ways. (You will notice that the two groups will end up with two different outcomes.)

To this group God says:

“Listen up now! Pay attention to what I have to say to you. You need to remember whose you are, and where you have come from. Look back into your past, remember what I have done for you. REMEMBER!”

Over the coming days we will find God prompting Israel to remember. Tomorrow we will find Him encouraging them, once again, to look back, in particular to Abraham and Sarah. He wants them to remember where their roots began, and what God did for two people who were obedient to do His will.

“Look to the rock from which you were cut and to the quarry from which you were dug.” -(NOG)

Take a moment and consider who the Rock is, and how this affects and applies to Israel. There is a verse in Deuteronomy that would be a good reminder for Israel, and us, at this point:

“He’s the Rock, and His work is perfect; everything He does is right.
He’s the God who can be trusted, who never does wrong because He’s righteous and upright.” -Deuteronomy 32:4 (VOICE)

“God’s faithfulness is the one constant in the equation. He is the Rock on which we stand.”
~Paul Silway

“Listen to me, all who hope for deliverance, who seek the Lord! Consider the quarry from which you were mined, the rock from which you were cut!” -(TLB)

“God counsels His people to look at His work in His people in days past. This is one of the great glories of God’s word to us; it tells us how God has dealt with His people and gives us faith and guidance for His work in our lives – if we will listen to Him.” ~David Guzik

Sadly, Israel had forgotten where they had come from, what they had endured. God wanted them to remember. He needed them to bring back to mind all of those situations that He had brought them through. In the past Israel had been told to remember, but they had sadly neglected this directive, and had forgotten. God had instructed them in this way:

1.) Remember what it was like when you were a slave in Egypt. Then with overwhelming power I brought you out of there. That’s why I have commanded you to observe the Sabbath each week.” -Deuteronomy 5:15 (VOICE)

2.) “When God, your God, ushers you into the land he promised through your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to give you, you’re going to walk into large, bustling cities you didn’t build, well-furnished houses you didn’t buy, come upon wells you didn’t dig, vineyards and olive orchards you didn’t plant. When you take it all in and settle down, pleased and content, make sure you don’t forget how you got there—God brought you out of slavery in Egypt.” -Deuteronomy 6:10-12 (MSG)

3.) “You must obey very carefully all of the law, which I’m commanding you today. If you do, you’ll live and thrive, and you’ll go in and take possession of the land He promised to your ancestors. Remember how the Eternal, your True God, led you through the wilderness these past 40 years. He did this to humble you, to test you, to uncover your motivations, to see if you would obey His commands. He humbled you by making you hungry when there was no food in the desert. Then He fed you with manna, a food you and your ancestors had never heard of. He did this because He wanted you to understand that what makes you truly alive is not the bread you eat but following every word that comes from the mouth of the Eternal One. Your clothes didn’t wear out, and your feet didn’t swell throughout your 40 years of wandering. I want you to know in your hearts that the Eternal your God has been training you just as a parent trains a child.” -Deuteronomy 8:1-5 (VOICE)

“Take time to remember your spiritual roots: you will be encouraged in your faith.” ~Warren Wiersbe

My friend, look back and remember where it is that God has brought you from. Remember what He has done for you, and give Him praise

“Remember this, and take courage. Recall your rebellious acts. Remember the first events, because I am God, and there is no other. I am God, and there’s no one like me. From the beginning I revealed the end. From long ago I told you things that had not yet happened, saying, “My plan will stand, and I’ll do everything I intended to do.” ~God (Isaiah 46:8-10 GW)

My Prayer:

Adonai–Tzva’ot, God Almighty, help me to look back and remember where you have brought me from. I do not want to forget and become ungrateful towards you; or forget the past, and forget whose I am. Lord, I am who I am because of you. You have brought me from a terrible past, a life of sin, and you have redeemed me and set me free. Your Son, Jesus, paid the price that I could not pay, and now I am able to be counted among your children. I have so much to be thankful for, and I am so blessed. I look back and remember, you have always been faithful to me. You are so good to me!

The One, True Light – Isaiah 50:11

Growing with God: A daily devotional with Tonia Slimm.

Isaiah 50:11 (NIV)

“But now, all you who light fires and provide yourselves with flaming torches, go, walk in the light of your fires and of the torches you have set ablaze. This is what you shall receive from my hand: You will lie down in torment.”

Isaiah 50:11 (MSG)

“But if all you’re after is making trouble, playing with fire, go ahead and see where it gets you. Set your fires, stir people up, blow on the flames, but don’t expect me to just stand there and watch. I’ll hold your feet to those flames.”

************************************

“Listen carefully, all you who kindle your own fire [devising your own man-made plan of salvation], who surround yourselves with torches, walk by the light of your [self-made] fire and among the torches that you have set ablaze. But this you will have from My hand: you will lie down in [a place of] torment.” -AMPLIFIED

“Those who ‘light fires’ refers to men who had their own schemes and their own gods. Because they had rejected the light of God’s Word, they would face terrible punishment.” ~Wolf

in yesterday’s text, we were reminded that those who listen to and obey the Lord walk in the Light.

“Who among you has true fear and reverence of Yahweh?
Who of you listens to the voice of his servant?
Are any of you groping in the dark without light?
Let him trust in the faithful name of Yahweh
and rely on his God.” -Isaiah 50:10 (The Passion Translation)

In today’s text, we are told that those who try to make their own light, will be consumed by it.

“Walking in darkness means being controlled by desires for this world instead of desires for God.” ~John Piper

Ah, but if you’ve tried to go it alone, the light by which you go is your own consuming fire, and the torches you light will be your undoing. Eternal One: By My hand you will go down in torment.” -(VOICE)

This verse is addressed to those people who insist on kindling their own fires to make the light that they need. Isaiah identifies these people as troublemakers. Instead of doing things God’s way, they try to make their journey in this life on their own.

We find God quickly setting them right, telling them: “But this is what you will receive from me: You will lie down in a place of pain.” -(ICB)

If people insist on doing things their way, and not God’s way, they can expect a sad end. Further along in the book of Isaiah we find a warning of what happens to those who rebel against God:

“And they shall go out and look at the dead bodies of those who have rebelled against me, for their worm shall never die; their fire shall not be quenched; and they shall be a disgusting sight to all mankind.” -Isaiah 66:24 (TLB)

“Those who continue in their own way, dealing with life’s darkness by a “do-it-yourself” remedy, are doomed. How true it is to this life that those who trust walk in darkness and those who are self-sufficient walk in light! . . . The picture here is of people seeking to equip themselves, out of earthly resources, to deal with earth’s dark experiences. They feel the need of nothing they cannot generate for themselves.” ~J. Alec Motyer

“But see here, you who live in your own light and warm yourselves from your own fires and not from God’s; you will live among sorrows.” -(TLB)

The point being is this: Those who “think” they can make their own way through this life and into heaven will find that this is not possible. There is only one way to heaven, one way to walk in the Light, and it is through Jesus Christ. In fact, Jesus told the people this:

“Jesus once again addressed them: “I am the world’s Light. No one who follows me stumbles around in the darkness. I provide plenty of light to live in.”” -John 8:12 (MSG)

Jesus also identified Himself as the Way, the Truth and the Life, the only way to the Father.

“Jesus said, “I am the Road, also the Truth, also the Life. No one gets to the Father apart from me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him. You’ve even seen him!” -John 14:6-7 (MSG)

John, in his first epistle, tells us that God is Light, clean, pure Light. And as His children, we need to be walking in His Light, not in any other light. John wrote:

“What we are telling you now is the very message we heard from Him: God is pure light, undimmed by darkness of any kind. If we say we have an intimate connection with the Father but we continue stumbling around in darkness, then we are lying because we do not live according to truth. If we walk step by step in the light, where the Father is, then we are ultimately connected to each other through the sacrifice of Jesus His Son. His blood purifies us from all our sins. If we go around bragging, “We have no sin,” then we are fooling ourselves and are strangers to the truth. But if we own up to our sins, God shows that He is faithful and just by forgiving us of our sins and purifying us from the pollution of all the bad things we have done.  If we say, “We have not sinned,” then we depict God as a liar and show that we have not let His word find its way into our hearts.” -1 John 1:5-10 (VOICE)

As John tells us, God’s Light will reveal, convict, and guides us to repentance. It was Paul who told us that the wages of sin were death, but God’s gift to us, if we choose to take it was eternal life.

“The payoff for a life of sin is death, but God is offering us a free gift—eternal life through our Lord Jesus, the Anointed One, the Liberating King.” -Romans 6:23 (VOICE)

“In this generation, many call themselves the “light”, but they are counterfeits and cause many people to fall away from God. The light of Jesus Christ doesn’t excuse our sins, but instead His sacrifice brings us to a place of repentance with a desire to change the course. Jesus will always lead us in the right direction for God’s purpose.” ~Crystal McDowell

My friend, there is but one way to heaven, and to be made right with God, and it is through Jesus Christ our Lord. He alone is the Light, which illuminates our lives, and leads along the pathways that we are to follow. Any other light is a counterfeit and will lead us away from God. Turn to the One, True Light and receive His salvation.

“God is light and he does reveal truth, he does measure life, he does give us a reference point by which the false can be separated from the true. Best of all, he fulfills, he glorifies, he energizes, he vitalizes. But he does so only as we learn to take down the umbrellas that hide the light from us.” ~Ray Stedman

My Prayer:

Adonai–Tzva’ot, God Almighty, your Word tells me that Jesus is The Light, the One, and only. His Light illuminates the darkness, revealing the Truth. His Spirit convicts, and leads my heart to accept His Truth about my sins. This makes it possible for me to confess my sins, and to ask forgiveness. Lord, I accept that Jesus is the Light. I do not want to walk in darkness anymore. Be the Light of my life. Be glorified in my life and help me to live a holy life. Thank you, Lord.

Trust in the Lord, He is the Light – Isaiah 50:10

Growing with God: A daily devotional with Tonia Slimm.

Isaiah 50:10 (NIV)

“Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the word of his servant? Let the one who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the Lord and rely on their God.”

Isaiah 50:10 (MSG)

“Who out there fears God, actually listens to the voice of his servant? For anyone out there who doesn’t know where you’re going, anyone groping in the dark, Here’s what: Trust in God. Lean on your God!”

*************************************

“Who is among you who fears the Lord, who obeys the voice of His Servant, yet who walks in darkness and has no light? Let him trust and be confident in the name of the Lord and let him rely on his God.” -AMPLIFIED

“The following section is a call to listen to the Servant, to follow His example, and so experience God’s salvation. Failure to do so would result in sharing the fate of His opponents .” ~Thomas Constable

In yesterday’s text, we learned that Adonai–Tzva’ot, God Almighty, would be the power behind the Messiah, and that in the end He would be triumphant, whereas His accusers would come to a sad end.

“It is the Lord Yahweh who empowers me; who would condemn me?
My accusers will all fade away like worn-out, moth-eaten clothes.” -Isaiah 50:9 (The Passion Translation)

Most commentators believe that the Suffering Servant’s testimony ends with verse 9, and that the last two verses of the chapter were either the words of God, or an admonition from Isaiah. Remember this, whoever the speaker is, that Isaiah wrote the book under the influence of the Holy Spirit. And: “Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way. Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us.” -2 Timothy 3:16-17 (MSG)

“One who trusts in Jesus Christ will never be ashamed. What God does is that He challenges people to trust in this One whom He sent. Notice where salvation is found – by relying on God. Not yourself, not your works, and not the church. Rely on Jesus Christ and trust only in Him.” ~David Thompson

So, you who are listening, do you acknowledge the Eternal One as God? And do you take seriously what the servant of God has to say? If you are enveloped in darkness, with no light to see, take confidence in the name of the Eternal One; rely on your God.” -(VOICE)

Whoever the speaker may be, the question is asked, “Who among you fears the Lord and is obedient to the word of His Servant?” For those who do not fear the Lord will not heed His voice. They will choose not to obey Him or His Servant.

We then are given the contrast of light and darkness. And we are told that there are people who are choosing to walk in the darkness. We are told that the Suffering Servant, Himself, is the Light. Those who put their trust and confidence in the Lord, relying on Him, are choosing to walk in the Light.

“Who among you fears the Lord and obeys his Servant? If such men walk in darkness, without one ray of light, let them trust the Lord, let them rely upon their God.” -(TLB)

“The Messiah guides His people into the path of light. Simply, trust in the name of the LORD and rely upon your God. It isn’t necessarily easy, but it certainly is simple.” ~David Guzik

It was Solomon who told us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge and wisdom:

“Start with God—the first step in learning is bowing down to God; only fools thumb their noses at such wisdom and learning.” -Proverbs 1:7 (MSG)

It was also Solomon who taught us the need of wholly trusting in the Lord.

“Place your trust in the Eternal; rely on Him completely; never depend upon your own ideas and inventions. Give Him the credit for everything you accomplish, and He will smooth out and straighten the road that lies ahead. And don’t think you can decide on your own what is right and what is wrong. Respect the Eternal; turn and run from evil. If you depend on Him, your body and mind will be free from the strain of a sinful life, will experience healing and health, and will be strengthened at their core.” -Proverbs 3:5-8 (VOICE)

So, the question is, are we listening? Are we choosing to walk in the Light, which I remind you, Jesus said He was the Light.

“I am the light that shines through the cosmos; if you walk with Me, you will thrive in the nourishing light that gives life and will not know darkness.” -John 8:12 (VOICE)

Jesus, speaking to the crowds that followed Him, encouraged them to walk in and trust the Light:

“Jesus answered, “The light will be among you a little longer. Continue on your way while you have the light, so that the darkness will not come upon you; for the one who walks in the dark does not know where he is going. Believe in the light, then, while you have it, so that you will be the people of the light.” -John 12:35-36a (Good News Translation)

“To walk in the light is to have a daily commitment to living out a righteous life. Those who are compelled to walk in the light resist fellowship with the darkness of the devil, the world, or the flesh. Walking in the light renews and refreshes us within so that we are empowered to be a refreshment to those around us.” ~Crystal McDowell

In John’s first epistle he encourages the Christian to remember to walk in the Light.

“If we claim that we experience a shared life with him and continue to stumble around in the dark, we’re obviously lying through our teeth—we’re not living what we claim. But if we walk in the light, God himself being the light, we also experience a shared life with one another, as the sacrificed blood of Jesus, God’s Son, purges all our sin.” -1 John 1:6-7 (MSG)

“…if you trust in the Lord, and rely upon God, it has its own power—then the light begins to dawn for you and things begin to make sense out of the chaos, out of the confusion. And then there is hope and there’s the possibility of deliverance for you, from the powers of darkness…” ~Avraham Gileadi

My friend, who among you fears the Lord? If so, then obey His voice. Be holy as God is holy. Follow the example of Christ. Trust in the Lord, and walk in the Light.

“In a world of darkness faithful believers walk confidently and do not fall, because they trust in God. Others, who do not trust in God but who make their own ‘fire’ to give them light, will find in the end that the fire burns them. In other words, when people depend on human scheming instead of depending on God, they will find in the end that their scheming is the cause of their downfall.” ~Bridgeway Bible Commentary

My Prayer:

Adonai–Tzva’ot, God Almighty, your Son is the Light of the World, and I choose to trust Him. He is the One who will help me make this journey through life. He is the One who I can always depend on, even when I do not immediately see the answer. He is the One who made it possible for me to step into your very presence, and I will be forever grateful. Jesus Christ made the way for me to be counted as a child of the Most High God. He is my hope, and I will forever trust in Him.
