Growing with God: A daily devotional with Tonia Slimm.
(The Advent: Faces within the Christmas Story.)
Luke 2:13-14 (NIV)
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
Luke 2:13-14 (MSG)
At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God’s praises: Glory to God in the heavenly heights, Peace to all men and women on earth who please him.
“Then suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host (angelic army) praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest [heaven], and on earth peace among men with whom He is well-pleased.” -AMPLIFIED
The Angel of the Lord finishes delivering his message and suddenly the sky is filled with the biggest, most glorious angel choir that has ever been seen by human eyes! For this birth announcement God was holding nothing back. A multitude of heavenly hosts sing out God’s praise!
So, you may be wondering what a multitude of heavenly hosts would actually look like. Luke does not tell us how many angels were included in this glorious announcement of praise, but we do get the idea that is was certainly something wondrous to behold.
The Apostle John though does give us a very good idea of what this remarkable celebration could have looked like. John tells us in the Revelation what he saw in his vision of Heaven; it paints us quite the picture too. John said, “I looked again. I heard a company of Angels around the Throne, the Animals, and the Elders—ten thousand times ten thousand their number, thousand after thousand after thousand in full song: The slain Lamb is worthy! Take the power, the wealth, the wisdom, the strength! Take the honor, the glory, the blessing!” -Revelation 5:11-12 (VOICE)
I am sure that this multitude of heavenly hosts were no less boisterous in singing their praise; nor would the throng or legion have been any less grand. Imagine the sight! The shepherds there on the hillside when the one angel surprised them; now suddenly the whole sky erupts with a flash of bright lights and the most magnificent choir ever heard by mankind. The spiritual beings that usually are invisible all around us are suddenly visible and what a fantastic presentation they gave in honor of the coming of the Messiah.
Let us remember too that this heavenly host was about the Father’s business as usual. Their job was not only to do His bidding, but to point to and bring glory to Him. That is exactly what we as children of the Most High God should be doing also. I am reminded of Psalm 148, which says:
“Praise the Eternal!
All you in the heavens, praise the Eternal;
praise Him from the highest places!
2 All you, His messengers and His armies in heaven:
3 Sun, moon, and all you brilliant stars above:
4 Highest heavens and all you waters above the heavens:
5 Let all things join together in a concert of praise to the name of the Eternal,
for He gave the command and they were created.
6 He put them in their places to stay forever—
He declared it so, and it is final.
7 Everything on earth, join in and praise the Eternal;
sea monsters and creatures of the deep,
8 Lightning and hail, snow and foggy mists,
violent winds all respond to His command.
9 Mountains and hills,
fruit trees and cedar forests,
10 All you animals both wild and tame,
reptiles and birds who take flight:
praise the Lord.
11 All kings and all nations,
princes and all judges of the earth,
12 All people, young men and women,
old men and children alike,
praise the Lord.
13 Let them all praise the name of the Eternal!
For His name stands alone above all others.
His glory shines greater than anything above or below.
14 He has made His people strong;
He is the praise of all who are godly,
the praise of the children of Israel, those whom He holds close.
Praise the Eternal! -(VOICE)
Hallelujah! Let us Praise the Lord!
Lord, you are the reason that I live. You are so amazing! Despite the fact that I have been born into sin, you still loved me and knew that I would need rescuing from that terrible curse. You made the plan and carried it through to provide a way of escape from sin through your Son, Jesus. You sent the Redeemer. You provided the means and the sacrifice. You, Almighty God, are the reason that I can find peace, love and joy! Hallelujah, what an Awesome, Amazing, and Wonderful God you are!
