Growing with God: A daily devotional with Tonia Slimm.
Joshua 23:11 (NIV)
So be very careful to love the Lord your God.
Joshua 23:11 (MSG)
Now, vigilantly guard your souls: Love God, your God.
“So be very careful and watchful of yourselves to love the Lord your God.” -AMPLIFIED
Joshua continues with his charge to the people. Now he comes to the very crux of his directive; “So always be careful to love the Eternal One, your God.” -(VOICE)
Joshua tells the people exactly what will happen to them if they willingly turn away from God. “If you turn away from Him and toward those left of the foreign nations among you—if your women marry them and their women marry you—you can be sure that the Eternal will turn from you. He won’t remove the nations around you, but instead He will let them be a snare for you to be caught in, a wound in your sides, and thorns in your eyes until you perish from this good land that He has given you.” -Joshua 23:12-13 (VOICE)
Be warned of the outcome when choosing to turn away from the Lord God; the repercussions tend to be more than we bargain for. Remember this warning that Moses gave to the people; “…be sure that your sin will find you out.” -Numbers 32:23b (AMP)
We go back once again to Joshua’s warning that the people be very careful to love the Lord God. Be on your guard; which means that there is a possibility of falling into neglect and slipping out of relationship with the Lord. Be vigilantly on guard the Message Version tells us. The Amplified warns that we need to be watchful.
Even the Apostle Paul warned the Corinthians of the need to be careful lest they fall. “These are all warning markers—danger!—in our history books, written down so that we don’t repeat their mistakes. Our positions in the story are parallel—they at the beginning, we at the end—and we are just as capable of messing it up as they were. Don’t be so naive and self-confident. You’re not exempt. You could fall flat on your face as easily as anyone else. Forget about self-confidence; it’s useless. Cultivate God-confidence.” -1 Corinthians 10:11-12 (MSG)
Joshua continues with these words that hold an important kernel of discouragement that I think we all need to hear, “The time has come for me to die and return to the earth. But I want to leave you with these thoughts: Think back and you will know without a doubt that not one single good thing that the Eternal One, your God, promised you has been left undone. Not a single one.” -Joshua 23:14 (VOICE)
Joshua is about to leave this World, but he takes the time to remind the people that not one of God’s promises have failed to be carried out. God is ever faithful. God is ever true. Let there be no doubt in your mind; what God has said, He will do.
Joshua once again warns the people that they too must remain faithful to God. If they choose instead to turn their backs on God there will be dire consequences indeed. “But in the same way the Eternal One, your True God, has fulfilled all these blessings, you can be sure that if you turn away from Him, He will fulfill the curses until the Eternal has obliterated you from this good land He gave you. If you break the commandments that He has laid upon you and turn from Him to serve and worship other gods, then His anger will flare white-hot against you, and you will quickly be wiped from the face of this good land He has given you.” -Joshua 23:15-16 (VOICE)
God wanted to be the Israelites One Source. He pointedly tries to help them see that there was nothing in this whole World that could satisfy, but Him. Because of this fact He warned them to love Him with everything that was within them. Things cannot satisfy, other people cannot fill the void in our lives, and money will not make us happy; the only One who can fill that longing in our lives is Abba Father. He is all we need; He is enough. Everything that we need can be found in the Father.
Father, help me to remember that you are all that I need. I do not need things that do not satisfy. I cannot find happiness with more money, I realize this. People cannot fill the place in my life that only you can fill. God, you are enough for me. Help me to seek everything that I need in you. Help me to remain faithful and true to you at all times. You are a faithful Father. You have kept all your promises. For me there will be no turning back.
