Growing with God: A daily devotional with Tonia Slimm.
Joshua 21:43-45 (NIV)
So the Lord gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors, and they took possession of it and settled there. The Lord gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their ancestors. Not one of their enemies withstood them; the Lord gave all their enemies into their hands. Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.
Joshua 21:43-45 (MSG)
And so God gave Israel the entire land that he had solemnly vowed to give to their ancestors. They took possession of it and made themselves at home in it. And God gave them rest on all sides, as he had also solemnly vowed to their ancestors. Not a single one of their enemies was able to stand up to them—God handed over all their enemies to them. Not one word failed from all the good words God spoke to the house of Israel. Everything came out right.
“So the Lord gave Israel all the land which He had sworn to give to their fathers (ancestors), and they took possession of it and lived in it. The Lord gave them rest [from conflict] on every side, in accordance with everything that He had sworn to their fathers, and not one of all their enemies stood before them [in battle]; the Lord handed over all their enemies to them. Not one of the good promises which the Lord had spoken to the house of Israel failed; all had come to pass.” -AMPLIFIED
Joshua 21 is almost exclusively dedicated to the giving of cities to the Levites. Almost, but the closing verse bring across some very important truths that we do not want to overlook.
1.) The Lord gave Israel all the land that He had sworn to give their ancestors.
2.)The Lord gave them rest on every side.
3.)Not one of their enemies was able to stand against them; for God had handed their enemies over to them.
Most importantly, we find this assurance that we must never overlook, “Not a single one of all the good promises that He had made to the house of Israel went unfulfilled; all of them came to pass.” -(AMP)
Not a single one of God’s promises that had been given to Israel had failed up to this point in time; nor would they ever after. Joshua, the writer of this book, could bear testimony to this fact; hence why he wrote these words in the closing chapters of the book. Joshua had seen that God was faithful to His people.
God Himself has stated in other passages of Scripture that He is indeed a Promise Keeper.
* “I don’t think the way you think. The way you work isn’t the way I work.” God’s Decree. “For as the sky soars high above earth, so the way I work surpasses the way you work, and the way I think is beyond the way you think. Just as rain and snow descend from the skies and don’t go back until they’ve watered the earth, doing their work of making things grow and blossom, producing seed for farmers and food for the hungry, so will the words that come out of my mouth not come back empty-handed. They’ll do the work I sent them to do, they’ll complete the assignment I gave them.” -Isaiah 55:8-11 (MSG)
* “In Jesus we hear a resounding “yes” to all of God’s many promises. This is the reason we say “Amen” to and through Jesus when giving glory to God. Remember that God has established our relationship with you in the Anointed One, and He has anointed and commissioned us for this special mission. He has marked us with His seal and placed His Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee, a down payment of the things to come.” -2 Corinthians 1:20-22 (VOICE)
* “His divine power has given us everything we need to experience life and to reflect God’s true nature through the knowledge of the One who called us by His glory and virtue. Through these things, we have received God’s great and valuable promises, so we might escape the corruption of worldly desires and share in the divine nature.” -2 Peter 1:3-4 (VOICE)
* “For God’s Word is solid to the core; everything he makes is sound inside and out. He loves it when everything fits, when his world is in plumb-line true. Earth is drenched in God’s affectionate satisfaction.” -Psalm 33:4-5 (MSG)
God’s promises always come to pass. They may not come in our timing, but they will most certainly come in His. Others, who do not follow Him, may try to stop His promises from coming to pass, but they will not be able to. In fact, Satan will do all within his power to stop those promises, but Jesus told His disciples that the Gates of Hell will not prevail. Remember too, the fulfillment of God’s promises is not dependent on us. He will bring about His perfect will in His perfect impeccable time. He is never too early and He is never too late. Trust Him! He is always faithful in fulfilling His promises!
God, you are ever faithful in fulfilling your promises. Thank you for that truth that I can hold onto in those times when I may have become discouraged in the waiting. You do things in your way and in your time. Help me to rest in the fact that you do things perfectly. Forgive me when I become frustrated in the waiting. Help me to patiently wait and trust. You do all things well. I cannot dispute that truth. Help me to trust and not be afraid; for you are the Ultimate Promise Keeper and not one of your promises will ever fail.
