The Fear of the Lord

Growing with God: A daily devotional with Tonia Slimm.

Joshua 9:1-2 (NIV)
Now when all the kings west of the Jordan heard about these things—the kings in the hill country, in the western foothills, and along the entire coast of the Mediterranean Sea as far as Lebanon (the kings of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites)—they came together to wage war against Joshua and Israel.

Joshua 9:1-2 (MSG)
“All the kings west of the Jordan in the hills and foothills and along the Mediterranean seacoast north toward Lebanon—the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, Girgashites, and Jebusites—got the news. They came together in a coalition to fight against Joshua and Israel under a single command.”
“Now when all the kings who were beyond the Jordan, in the hill country and in the lowland [at the western edge of the hills of Judea], and all along the coast of the Great [Mediterranean] Sea toward Lebanon, the Hittite and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite, heard of this [army and its victories over Jericho and Ai], they gathered together with one purpose to fight with Joshua and with Israel.” -AMPLIFIED

The news had traveled far and wide; the God of Israel brings them victory! When all the kings on the west side of the Jordan heard the news of how Israel’s God had lead them to conquering both Jericho and Ai they freaked out! All the kings banded together to fight against Joshua and all of Israel.

Remember how God’s reputation always precedes him? God had been doing amazing miracles consistently for the people of Israel. Those miracles started in Egypt and had continued throughout those forty years of wandering the desert. Then there was the amazing miracle of the crossing of the Jordan. Remember what Joshua said to them when the Jordan dried up? “For the Eternal One, your God, dried up the waters of the Jordan until you crossed over (just as He held back the Red Sea for our parents until they crossed)so that everyone on earth would know how powerful the Eternal is and so that you would reverence your God, the Eternal, forever.” -Joshua 4:23-24 (VOICE)

All those miracles had put the fear of God into the people of the surrounding countries. Everyone in the area did indeed know how powerful the Eternal One, the Lord God was and they were afraid. These various nations, that normally did not get along together, decided to come together into one alliance to fight against this unknown power, the people of Israel.

It is always important to remember who we are, who’s we are and what we are fighting for. We are children of the Most High God and we are fighting the ultimate battle of all time; between good and evil. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this [present] darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) places.” -Ephesians 6:12 (AMP)

The Message Version puts Ephesians 6:1-12 like this, “And that about wraps it up. God is strong, and he wants you strong. So take everything the Master has set out for you, well-made weapons of the best materials. And put them to use so you will be able to stand up to everything the Devil throws your way. This is no afternoon athletic contest that we’ll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish against the Devil and all his angels.”

Christian, don’t forget whose you are! You are a child of the Most High God. He goes before you and makes straight your pathway. He fights your battles. He will never leave you or forsake you. He loves you with an everlasting love. The list goes on and on; for God’s Word is full of His promises and He is faithful to keep every one.

This is why King David could say with great confidence, “In God have I put my trust and confident reliance; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” -Psalm 56:11 (AMP) We have nothing to fear if God is on our side.

Remember, the battle is the Lord’s!

My Prayer:
Lord, I will not fear what other’s can do to me, but I will trust in you. You have put the fear of God into the heart’s and minds’s of those who stand against you. Remind me often, that the battle that we struggle in is a spiritual battle. It is the ultimate battle between good and evil, but in the end YOU will be victorious. Hallelujah! I am so glad to know that that Enemy, that has tried to trip me up and pull me down too many times, will be finally defeated. Lord God, You are the Victor!
