Growing with God: A daily devotional with Tonia Slimm.
Deuteronomy 32:45-47 (NIV)
When Moses finished reciting all these words to all Israel, he said to them, “Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day, so that you may command your children to obey carefully all the words of this law. They are not just idle words for you—they are your life. By them you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”
When Moses had finished saying all these words to all Israel, he said, “Take to heart all these words to which I give witness today and urgently command your children to put them into practice, every single word of this Revelation. Yes. This is no small matter for you; it’s your life. In keeping this word you’ll have a good and long life in this land that you’re crossing the Jordan to possess.”
“When Moses had finished speaking all these words to all [the people of] Israel, he said to them, “Take to heart all the words of warning which I am speaking to you today; and you shall command your children to observe them carefully—to do all the words of this law. For it is not an empty or trivial matter for you; indeed it is your [very] life. By [honoring and obeying] this word you will live long in the land, which you are crossing the Jordan to possess.” -AMPLIFIED
Yesterday we addressed some of the song that Moses had sung before the people. Today we are looking at what he said to the people after his song of testimony. Something that we must keep in mind at this point is that all of this is leading up to the death of Moses. These last few chapters of Deuteronomy are Moses’ final words to the people of Israel.
Jewish tradition entitles Deuteronomy 32 as “Haazinu”. The word is Hebrew for “listen”. It pertains to when someone is speaking to a group of people and they say, “Listen”. The Jews generally read this portion of Scripture on a Sabbath between the holy days of Rosh Hashanah and Sukkot; sometime in September or October.
We find Moses warning the people, “Take to heart all these words of warning”. The VOICE translation puts it like this, “Every word I’ve said to you today will be a witness against you, so set it in your heart, remember it well, and teach it to your children, so they’ll be careful to obey every word of this law. You can’t afford to ignore even one word; your very life depends on it! It’s how you’ll be able to live a long time in the land on the other side of the Jordan that will be your territory.” -Deuteronomy 32:46-47 (VOICE)
This is serious business and the people’s lives were dependent on their obedience to God; both physically and spiritually. Moses clarifies the fact that this was NOT an empty, trivial matter; it was important. These words were life.
“Here is the solemn delivery of this song to Israel, with a charge to mind all the good words Moses had said unto them. It is not a trifle, but a matter of life and death: mind it, and you are made for ever; neglect it, and you are for ever undone. Oh that men were fully persuaded that religion is their life, even the life of their souls!” -Matthew Henry
God’s Word is life itself to us. We need to read it, live it and breathe it. The writer of Hebrews expresses it this way in Hebrews 4:12-13:
“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (NIV)
“God means what he says. What he says goes. His powerful Word is sharp as a surgeon’s scalpel, cutting through everything, whether doubt or defense, laying us open to listen and obey. Nothing and no one is impervious to God’s Word. We can’t get away from it—no matter what.” (MSG)
“For the word of God is living and active and full of power [making it operative, energizing, and effective]. It is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating as far as the division of the soul and spirit [the completeness of a person], and of both joints and marrow [the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart. And not a creature exists that is concealed from His sight, but all things are open and exposed, and revealed to the eyes of Him with whom we have to give account.” -(AMPLIFIED)
Our very lives and the happiness that we have in them are dependent on our obedience to God and His Word. Just do what God has commanded and you will have a good life. God says this to us, “So it is when I declare something. My word will go out and not return to Me empty, But it will do what I wanted; it will accomplish what I determined.” -Isaiah 55:11 (VOICE)
God Almighty, let your Words of life be part of my daily life. Your Words are full of power. Help me to obediently listen and do as you have commanded me. You have promised a good life to those who walk with you and I know that as long as we walk together through this life everything will be okay. Thank you for giving me your living, breathing Word to help me through every part of my life. God you are so good.
