The Secret Things of God

Growing with God: A daily devotional with Tonia Slimm.

Deuteronomy 29:29 (NIV)
The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.

Deuteronomy 29:29 (MSG)
God, our God, will take care of the hidden things but the revealed things are our business. It’s up to us and our children to attend to all the terms in this Revelation.
“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things which are revealed and disclosed belong to us and to our children forever, so that we may do all of the words of this law.” -AMPLIFIED

Deuteronomy 29:2-6 shares the following words, “Moses summoned all the Israelites and said to them: Your eyes have seen all that the Lord did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials and to all his land. With your own eyes you saw those great trials, those signs and great wonders. But to this day the Lord has not given you a mind that understands or eyes that see or ears that hear. Yet the Lord says, “During the forty years that I led you through the wilderness, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet. You ate no bread and drank no wine or other fermented drink. I did this so that you might know that I am the Lord your God.” (NIV)

Moses makes the point that the people had seen with their very own eyes and heard with their own ears the mighty things that God had done for them. Forty years God had lead them through the wilderness and yet, their clothes did not wear out, their sandals did not fall apart. God provided them with manna and water; since they did not have bread, wine or strong drink. God did these things for the people so that they would know that it was He who protected them. He who provided for them and He who continually watched over them.

Our text says, “The secret things belong to the Lord.” We must realize that God does not reveal everything to us. Certain things He keeps to Himself; for His own reasons and His own purposes. It would be nice to know it all; why things happen, when and where. But if we had all the answers one must wonder how dependent we would stay on God for our every need.

We need to realize something, it is not that the Lord does not want His people to understand how He works, His ways or His purposes. What we must understand is that there are certain things that are not revealed to us for reasons that only God knows. Sometimes He gives insight to those who humbly acknowledge and obey Him; sometimes He does not. Spiritual perception is a gift that God gives when it is in accord with His purposes.

Over an over again Jesus used this short phrase, “He who has ears, let him hear.” The things that God allows the Holy Spirit to reveal to us belong to us and to our children. When we see them, when we hear them then we need to do them. “We and our descendants are always responsible for what has been revealed to us, and we need to obey every word of this law.” -Deuteronomy 29:29 (VOICE)

Barnes Notes makes note of this, “The future, when and how these good and evil things will take effect, it lies with the Lord our God to determine; it pertains not to man’s sphere and duty. God’s revealed will is that which we must carry out.”

Jesus made note of this fact, God gives insight to His children of His ways. It may not be all of the time or in every situation, but He does give insight. “He replied, “You’ve been given insight into God’s kingdom. You know how it works. Not everybody has this gift, this insight; it hasn’t been given to them. Whenever someone has a ready heart for this, the insights and understandings flow freely. But if there is no readiness, any trace of receptivity soon disappears. That’s why I tell stories: to create readiness, to nudge the people toward receptive insight. In their present state they can stare till doomsday and not see it, listen till they’re blue in the face and not get it. I don’t want Isaiah’s forecast repeated all over again: Your ears are open but you don’t hear a thing. Your eyes are awake but you don’t see a thing. The people are blockheads! They stick their fingers in their ears so they won’t have to listen; They screw their eyes shut so they won’t have to look, so they won’t have to deal with me face-to-face and let me heal them.” – Matthew 13:11-15 (MSG)

Jesus also told His followers this; “He said to them, “A lamp is not brought in to be put under a basket or under a bed, is it? Is it not [brought in] to be put on the lampstand? For nothing is hidden, except to be revealed; nor has anything been kept secret, but that it would come to light [that is, things are hidden only temporarily, until the appropriate time comes for them to be known].” -Mark 4:21-22 (AMP)

We may need to wait for God to reveal the answers to many of our questions, but it will be worth the wait. We may not get all the answers we want here on Earth, but once we get to Heaven we will have all of Eternity to understand the secrets of God.

What we do know and can understand is that it is no secret what God can do for us in our lives. Thank Him for His hand on your life and trust that He will reveal the secret things in His way and in His time.
