Growing with God: A daily devotional with Tonia Slimm.
If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God: You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country. The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks. Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed. You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.
If you listen obediently to the Voice of God, your God, and heartily obey all his commandments that I command you today, God, your God, will place you on high, high above all the nations of the world. All these blessings will come down on you and spread out beyond you because you have responded to the Voice of God, your God: God’s blessing inside the city, God’s blessing in the country; God’s blessing on your children, the crops of your land, the young of your livestock, the calves of your herds, the lambs of your flocks. God’s blessing on your basket and bread bowl;
God’s blessing in your coming in, God’s blessing in your going out.
“Now it shall be, if you diligently listen to and obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all of His commandments which I am commanding you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you pay attention to the voice of the Lord your God. “You will be blessed in the city, and you will be blessed in the field. “The offspring of your body and the produce of your ground and the offspring of your animals, the offspring of your herd and the young of your flock will be blessed. “Your basket and your kneading bowl will be blessed. “You will be blessed when you come in and you will be blessed when you go out.” -AMPLIFIED
The NIV entitles this portion of Deuteronomy “Blessings for Obedience”. Moses tells the people of Israel, “If you listen closely to the voice of the Eternal your God and carefully obey all the commands I’m giving you today, He’ll lift you up high above every other nation on earth. All of the following blessings will be yours—in fact, they’ll chase after you—if you’ll listen to what He tells you.” -Deuteronomy 28:1-2 (VOICE)
Moses instructs the people to listen closely and carefully. Not only that, but OBEY! If they would do that, then God would lift them up or esteem them above all the other nations and He would richly bless them. The Hebrew word for blessing is esher, which translates to happiness. To be blessed is to be favored, to be made successful, to praise, or to give a benefit or reward to someone.
Baker’s Evangelical Dictionary shares these thoughts on blessings, “God’s intention and desire to bless humanity is a central focus of his covenant relationships. For this reason, the concept of blessing pervades the biblical record. Two distinct ideas are present. First, a blessing was a public declaration of a favored status with God. Second, the blessing endowed power for prosperity and success. In all cases, the blessing served as a guide and motivation to pursue a course of life within the blessing.”
Moses once again reminds the people of the importance of obeying the Most High. It would indeed be a fearful thing to promise God your obedience and then break that promise to Him. That person best be warned and beware. Malachi prophesied this word from the Lord, “If you do not listen, and if you do not resolve to honor my name,” says the Lord Almighty, “I will send a curse on you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have already cursed them, because you have not resolved to honor me.” –Malachi 2: 2 (NIV)
The person who was obedient could expect to be endowed with God’s blessings. Moses lists a few of those blessings that the obedient person could look forward to. “You’ll be blessed in the city and blessed in the fields. You’ll be blessed with children and crops and cattle. Your herds will multiply, and your flocks will increase. Your basket will be blessed; it will be full at harvest time, and your kneading bowl will be blessed; you’ll always have plenty of bread. You’ll be blessed when you go out of your home and blessed when you return to your home.” -Deuteronomy 28:3-6 (VOICE)
There are many Scriptures that speak about God’s blessings; below are just a few:
* “Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God.” -Psalm 146:5 (NIV)
* “Surely you have granted him unending blessings and made him glad with the joy of your presence.” -Psalm 21:6 (NIV)
* “God spoke to Moses: “Tell Aaron and his sons, This is how you are to bless the People of Israel. Say to them, “God bless you and keep you, God smile on you and gift you, God look you full in the face and make you prosper.” In so doing, they will place my name on the People of Israel—I will confirm it by blessing them.” -Numbers 6:23-28 (MSG)
May we always seek the blessings of God in our lives.
Lord, I want to be blessed by you. I seek to be a blessing to you too. Help me to live my life in such a way that I am pleasing to you and in turn I can know what to expect from you; blessings. Help me to be obedient to you. Help me to walk in your ways. Help me to follow the example of Jesus Christ; your precious Son. Help me to also be a blessing to everyone that I come in contact with. Thank you, Lord.
