Growing with God: A daily devotional with Tonia Slimm.
The Lord your God commands you this day to follow these decrees and laws; carefully observe them with all your heart and with all your soul. You have declared this day that the Lord is your God and that you will walk in obedience to him, that you will keep his decrees, commands and laws—that you will listen to him. And the Lord has declared this day that you are his people, his treasured possession as he promised, and that you are to keep all his commands. He has declared that he will set you in praise, fame and honor high above all the nations he has made and that you will be a people holy to the Lord your God, as he promised.
Deuteronomy 26:16-19 (MSG)
This very day God, your God, commands you to follow these rules and regulations, to live them out with everything you have in you. You’ve renewed your vows today that God is your God, that you’ll live the way he shows you; do what he tells you in the rules, regulations, and commandments; and listen obediently to him. And today God has reaffirmed that you are dearly held treasure just as he promised, a people entrusted with keeping his commandments, a people set high above all other nations that he’s made, high in praise, fame, and honor: you’re a people holy to God, your God. That’s what he has promised.
“This day the Lord your God commands you to do these statutes and judgments (precepts). Therefore, you shall be careful to do them with all your heart and with all your soul (your entire being). Today you have [openly] declared the Lord to be your God, and that you will walk [that is, live each and every day] in His ways and keep His statutes, His commandments, and His judgments (precepts), and listen to His voice. Today the Lord has declared that you are His people, His treasured possession, just as He promised you, and that you are to keep all His commandments; and that He will set you high above all the nations which He has made, for praise, fame, and honor: and that you shall be a holy people [set apart and consecrated] to the Lord your God, just as He has spoken.” -AMPLIFIED
Moses once again admonishes the people of Israel to follow the commands that God has given them. The past few chapters have been spent reviewing the laws of God. Moses took the time to explain and clarify many of the details for the people; for he did not want them straying away from what God intended for them.
Moses tells the people, “Today the Eternal your God commands you to follow all these regulations and decrees. Obey them carefully and devotedly with your whole heart and soul.” -Deuteronomy 26:16 (VOICE) (This is not the first time that the people of Israel were told to love the Lord their God with everything that is within them.)
We find in our text Moses reminding the people of the covenant that they had made with God. “You’ve declared today that the Eternal will be your God, that you’ll live as He wants you to, that you’ll obey His regulations, commands and decrees, and that you’ll listen to His voice.” -Deuteronomy 26:17 (VOICE)
Notice what Moses says to the people next, “And today the Eternal has declared that you are His people—His own special possession, just as He said—and He’s acknowledged your promise to keep all His commands.” -Deuteronomy 26:18 (VOICE) God has called His people His own special, treasured possession. All of God’s children are special and treasured by Him.
Moses concludes this address to the people of Israel with these words,”He’s (God has)declared that He’ll lift you up high above all the other nations He’s made. You’ll be praised, renowned, and honored. You also will be a people who are set apart for the Eternal your God, just as He said.” -Deuteronomy 26:19 (VOICE)
I wonder if we truly understand how special we are to God? Too often we tend to think that God does not care about us or the details of our lives; and that is absolutely not true. In fact, God loves each of us personally; not just as a whole. He knows everything about each of us. (Remember, He even knows the hairs on each one of our heads.) The details of your life, your secret desires and dreams; those are all important to God. He wants you to take time to share those things with Him and He would love to help you reach those goals that you have set for yourself; if they are compatible with His plans for your life.
Out of all the people that are living or have lived God still cares about you and knows you. You are special to Him. You are His treasured possession; believe that truth. God loved you so much that He sent His one and only Son, Jesus Christ to die for you. If you were the only one in this whole, wide world that needed saving He still would have sent His Son. He loves you that much.
Stop believing the lies of the Enemy of your soul and accept that love that has been extended to you. You have a special place in God’s heart; believe it!
God Almighty, Lover of my soul. I will believe that I am your treasured possession; special to you. I understand the sacrifice that you made, by sending your Son Jesus, to die for my sin. I cannot fathom your great love for me, but I can accept it. You are my Father and I am your child; your treasured possession.
