Growing with God: A daily devotional with Tonia Slimm.
Exodus 10:12 (NIV)
And the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over Egypt so that locusts swarm over the land and devour everything growing in the fields, everything left by the hail.”
Exodus 10:12 (MSG)
God said to Moses: “Stretch your hand over Egypt and signal the locusts to cover the land of Egypt, devouring every blade of grass in the country, everything that the hail didn’t get.”
“Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, so that they may come up on the land of Egypt and eat all the plants of the land, all that the hail has left.” -AMPLIFIED
Strike eight is about to happen, but first we need to look at something ironic that Pharaoh said to Moses in verse 10; this truly portrays the way that Satan works behind the scenes. Ridiculously we find Pharaoh accusing Moses of the very thing that he was doing, “Clearly you are bent on evil.” he said. How Satan loves to twist things around in our minds.
God told Moses, “Enough is enough! Go; stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt and the locusts will come. They will ravage and wipe out everything that was left after the hail storm.”
So Moses did what God commanded him to do. “Moses stretched out his staff over the land of Egypt. God let loose an east wind. It blew that day and night. By morning the east wind had brought in the locusts. The locusts covered the country of Egypt, settling over every square inch of Egypt; the place was thick with locusts. There never was an invasion of locusts like it in the past, and never will be again. The ground was completely covered, black with locusts. They ate everything, every blade of grass, every piece of fruit, anything that the hail didn’t get. Nothing left but bare trees and bare fields—not a sign of green in the whole land of Egypt.” -Exodus 10:13-16 (MSG)
We find that Jehovah has challenged a few more of Egypt’s false gods at this time. First, there was Seth the god of storms and protector of crops. There was also, Thermuthis, the goddess of fertility and the harvest. Affected also was Nepri, who was the god of grain. Meanwhile, we find Isis the goddess of healing, life and rebirth remaining silent through the whole confrontation. All false gods; all influenced by the powers of darkness and empowered by Satan.
The locust came in and devoured everything in their pathway. They left not a single sign of green. Every tree, every bush, every blade of grass and grain was gone. Once again, we find Pharaoh calling Moses back, “Pharaoh quickly summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you. Now forgive my sin once more and pray to the Lord your God to take this deadly plague away from me.” -Exodus 10:16-17 (NIV)
Moses agreed to pray for Pharaoh. When he left Pharaoh’s presence Moses prayed and God, “changed the wind to a very strong west wind, which caught up the locusts and carried them into the Red Sea. Not a locust was left anywhere in Egypt.” Sadly, once again we find that God did His part, but Pharaoh did not carry through with his. He hardened his heart, changed his mind once again and would not let the people of Israel go.
We will find that there will be no confrontation between Moses and Pharaoh before the next plague hits. God is done playing Pharaoh’s games. Pharaoh could have learned from these words from the Apostle Paul, “Don’t be misled: No one makes a fool of God. What a person plants, he will harvest. The person who plants selfishness, ignoring the needs of others—ignoring God!—harvests a crop of weeds. All he’ll have to show for his life is weeds! But the one who plants in response to God, letting God’s Spirit do the growth work in him, harvests a crop of real life, eternal life.” -Galatians 6:7-8 (MSG)
Father God, help me to keep my heart and mind fixed on you; so that I am not deceived by the lies of the Enemy. You are the One, True God; the Almighty One who is from everlasting to everlasting. I know Satan would try to deceive and twist the way that I perceive you and what you do in my life. Help me to see clearly his lies and deceptions for what they are; more importantly, help me to keep my eyes on you.
