Help me to be faithful!

Growing with God: a daily devotion with Tonia Slimm.

Hebrews 11:7 (NIV)
By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.

“By faith [with confidence in God and His word] Noah, being warned by God about events not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his family. By this [act of obedience] he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness which comes by faith.” -AMPLIFIED

We find that Noah is remembered in the “Hall of Faith” for his unwavering faith and obedience to God. Noah had listened to the warning given by God, he believed by faith that God would do as He said He would do; so in obedience he obeyed. If Noah had not believed do you think he would have spend 120 years building an ark in the middle of nowhere, far from the water?

We find in Genesis the narration of what took place in Noah’s part of the story. “It was the six-hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month that it happened: all the underground springs erupted and all the windows of Heaven were thrown open. Rain poured for forty days and forty nights. That’s the day Noah and his sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth, accompanied by his wife and his sons’ wives, boarded the ship. And with them every kind of wild and domestic animal, right down to all the kinds of creatures that crawl and all kinds of birds and anything that flies. They came to Noah and to the ship in pairs—everything and anything that had the breath of life in it, male and female of every creature came just as God had commanded Noah. Then God shut the door behind him.” -Genesis 7:11-16 (MSG)

Notice something important, Noah obeyed, doing what God instructed him to do, and God took care of the details. Noah was to build the ark (this took his obedience) and God provided the animals; they came to him (God taking care of the details). Noah and his family entered into the ark (in obedience) and God shut the door (God taking care of the details). It is so amazing and wonderful to see God at work in the details when we step out in obedience to do what He calls us to do for Him.

The Amplified Version conveys the thought that Noah built the ark in a state of reverence. Consider this; he had been warned, he knew what God was about to do and he realized the grace that God had extended to himself and his family. What a humbling moment to realize that God had chosen him to carry on and all of the rest of mankind would be wiped out. How great the task was, but Noah knew that he must step up to the challenge; no matter what the cost.

Charles Spurgeon brings out a point that we need to consider when we look at this part of our text; “By this [act of obedience] he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness which comes by faith.” Charles says, “I do not read that Noah ever entered into any dispute with the men of his times. He never argued, much less did he wish them ill; he simply believed and told them the truth. He kept his own faith intact and went on building his ark, thus practicing what he believed. In this way he condemned those who criticized him. So you see that faith has a condemning power towards an ungodly world. You do not need to be constantly telling worldlings that they are doing wrong; let them see clearly the evidence of your faith, for that will bear the strongest conceivable witness against their unbelief and sin, even as Noah, by his faith, “condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.”

Live out your faith and obedience; just as Noah did. Let your faith and obedience speak for themselves. People will notice that you are different, you do not need to advertise that you are different. Live your commitment to God “Out Loud!” Walk the walk, don’t just talk the talk. Jesus said, “By your fruit you will know them.” Can others see you belong to Him?

My Prayer:
Lord, I want my life to be a living testimony to You. I want there to be no doubt in anyone’s mind of who I am and who I belong to. Let my faith and obedience to you be strong; just as Noah’s was. Let me not be swayed by those around me or enticed away from what I know is right and true. Help me to be faithful to you, dear Lord, and let me be strong through the strength that you give me.
