Growing with God: A daily devotional with Tonia Slimm.
Luke 1:30-33 (NIV)
But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
Luke 1:30-33 (MSG)
But the angel assured her, “Mary, you have nothing to fear. God has a surprise for you: You will become pregnant and give birth to a son and call his name Jesus. He will be great, be called ‘Son of the Highest.’ The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David; He will rule Jacob’s house forever—no end, ever, to his kingdom.”
“The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Listen carefully: you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great and eminent and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob (Israel) forever, and of His kingdom there shall be no end.”- AMPLIFIED
“He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.” Gabriel, the angel of the Lord, makes reference to the manhood of the Son of God. This child, this holy One which was to be born would be magnificent and He would be the Son of the Highest. He would be Divine. Jesus, the coming child was/is 100% God and 100% man. This child would be no ordinary human being.
The Apostle Paul explained to Titus about this new Kingdom that God was setting up through His Son. “God’s readiness to give and forgive is now public. Salvation’s available for everyone! We’re being shown how to turn our backs on a godless, indulgent life, and how to take on a God-filled, God-honoring life. This new life is starting right now, and is whetting our appetites for the glorious day when our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, appears. He offered himself as a sacrifice to free us from a dark, rebellious life into this good, pure life, making us a people he can be proud of, energetic in goodness.” -Titus 2:11-14 (MSG)
Jesus was Emmanuel, God with us; just as Joseph was told in his dream. It was God taking action on His own in order to make it possible for us to have relationship with Him. “All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).” Matthew 1:22-23 (NIV)
Can you imagine the emotions and feelings that were running through Mary and Joseph’s minds at this time? This child that they have been called upon to raise would be more than just an ordinary child. He would in actuality be the Son of the Most High God. I am sure at first they were in a state of shock and fear, for seeing an angel was not an every day experience. Once the angel had left and the message had started to truly sink in there would have been excitement and maybe a feeling of honor for being chosen. Then they felt possibly a feeling of trepidation; for being called to accomplish such a responsibility. I am sure that they both were dealing with a tangle of emotions for quite some time.
Remember though, the focus was not to be on Mary and Joseph, but on this child, Jesus, who was destined for greatness. God had called them to do great things for Him too and He would equip them for the job that He had called them to. The Child though would “Reign over Jacob’s descendants forever and his kingdom will never end.” This salvation that Jesus would bring would not last until a more powerful kingdom came around; for He can never be overthrown. He is the Son of God, the Most High One. You can be sure that His Kingdom will last throughout eternity!
Gabriel assured Mary that all this news was Good News! In fact, it was the news that mankind had been waiting for forever and did not even realize it. God was stepping in to make things right; how just like Him. Sending His love incarnate, to save a lost and dying World. Good News, Good News!
Lord, Almighty, Holy One, Most High, I am humbled by this amazing love that you have for me. You, who had it all, willing to sacrifice it all, in order to make it possible for me to come freely to you. This display of your amazing love is indeed Good News! King of kings, You are the Light to a lost and dying World; You are the Way, the Truth and the Life. May I point others to the One who’s Kingdom will last forever. I am humbled by all that You have done; what amazing love you have for me. “Such love, such wondrous love; such love, such wondrous love. That God should love a sinner such as I How wonderful is love like this.”
